According to the latest edition of Car Mechanics magazine i should fit a new sump bolt every time I change the oil. That would equate to 9 new bolts so far how can this be justified?

I still have the original sump bolt fitted, it is in perfect condition, it has never been over torqued or cross threaded, it does not have any sort of inbuilt seal. I merely give it a wipe and replace it with a new fibre washer. it has never leaked. So what am I missing?

Same article also recommends an annual cabin filter change and they are happy to leave the oil for 10,000 miles (or 1 year) which I also disagree with .

In the motorcycling world, the vast majority of bikes use a crush washer (similar to that on a spark plug) on the sump drain bolt. All manufacturers insist that the washer is renewed every time, or dire consequences will result.

I've never, ever renewed the washer in over 30 years of biking. I simply clean the bolt and washer of oil and dirt, then re-torque to spec. Never had a bolt loosen, never stripped one either.

If I remember correctly, some cars have plastic sumps and drain plugs, I can understand the requirement to replace the plug in those cases. But a metal plug in a metal sump? No.

I had a Nissan that had them on the sump plug. I thought it was a plain copper washer, so would thoroughly clean and anneal it before replacing. Never had a problem and then someone enlightened me!

They probably suck the oil out with a pump anyway and just charge for the bolt.

It can't. A new crush washer, possibly/probably. A pack of 5 or 6 costs peanuts on E-bay anyhow !

Would replace the copper washer each time but not the bolt unless Peugeot now use copper bolts.

Many late cars now have a plastic sump , so there’s no threaded plug . You now get a twist to lock stopper and O ring that should be replaced at each oil change.

It's the crush washer that matters. If you are careful it MAY seal after an oil change with the same washer but it also may slightly drip. The problem is if it does drip then the temptation is to tighten up just a little bit more until it doesn't - eventually the threads fail. Happened to me and it's a pain when it happens - Sump removal and Helicoil insert required. For the cost of a washer.....

For a firm which purports to take pride in its engineering, spoiling the ship for a ha'porth of tar seems an apposite aphorism nowadays for Peugeot. Apart from their crumbly cambelts, inferior design of its wheel lock bolts (our Mk1 Focus ones were better}, corroding aluminium wheels (at 5yrs old they look worse than our Focus wheels did at 15yrs), I learned the hard way that the stupid little copper washer on our Peugeot 2008's sump bolt was single use. Ford's integral washer and bolt assembly lasted the life (160,000+ miles and at least a dozen oil changes) of the engine. I had to raid my sc*** washer drawer for a serviceable one. Goodness knows how much copper get wasted if that's the same for most Stellantis sumps.

No washer worries with Fiat who've used a taper thread for years and years. I'm sure there have been monkeys who have tightened them to 100 ft lb, but that ham-fistedness can apply to any nut or bolt on a car.

John, those copper washers were always intended for single use because they are crushed to mate with the sump drain-face. 'Proper' garages always replaced them IIRC. Only DiY-ers like us reused them to save a few pence. I used to wrap used washers in PTFE tape just to make sure :-)

Only ever replaced one sump bolt so far - 2004 Mondeo 1.8 petrol that belongs to my mother.

I persuaded her to stop taking it to the Ford main dealer for service due to low mileage use, lads at local garage lifted it up on the ramp first time they serviced it & pointed out straight away it needed a new sump bung as the hex was all chewed up from pervious impact tool use.

Probably because far more than the sufficient recommended c. 20ftlb of torque was carelessly used to tighten it.

I changed one on a Lada once, mostly because some numpty had rounded it off and I'd had to take the sump off to drill a hole through it to use an extractor.

Neednt have bothered, since I never did another oil change on that car.

Perhaps its a token gesture designed by the Niche Marketing Department to cater to the few remaining DIYers who "do not know the war is over", (Japanese patrol stylee), giving them something they can actually still do.

One place I used to work at sold lubricators to fit to high pressure pneumatic lines. They had a knob on the top marked Adjustment. It didn't actually adjust anything. It was just there because some people like to fiddle with things and this gave them something harmless.
