Fiat Qubo 1.4 - 2019 Fiat Qubo (Petrol) - Thoughts - Ched86

Hi All,

I'm looking at a Fiat Qubo 1.4 Petrol (2019) with 50k on the clock. I'm after a car that i can sort of treat like a van and throw bikes etc in the back. I wondered if anyone had any experience of the later Qubo models as most reviews seem to be from the early days.

I bought a Kamiq on Cinch last week in an attempt to be more grown up, except I'm not really getting on with it, so i'm thinking about sending it back. It feels like quite a lot of car without the practicality I'm after.

Thanks.

Stephen

Not sure how buying a Kamiq would make you more grown up, why buying a van wouldn't, and why you'd buy something other than what fits your needs anyway?

Also curious as to why you don't get on with the Kamiq?, what's the problem?. Also, what did you have before the Kamiq?.

As for the Qubo. Well it is a very small car, not far off a foot shorter than a Kamiq. With rear seats in place (surprisingly) the boot length and width are not much different (though the height of the boot opening is over 23cm more on the Qubo). But with rear seats folded, the Qubo has 42cm less length at floor level. I'm assuming you need rear seats(?), otherwise the Fiorino (the van version of the Qubo) would be a better bet with a floor length about the same as the Kamiq (1.5M), but which can be extended by another meter by folding the passenger seat.

In terms of reliability, the Qubo with the 1.4 petrol should be fine being a simple n/a unit which has been around in various guises for a long time. But in terms of driving experience, performance, comfort and refinement, it will fall some way below the Kamiq. Even in its least powerful guise, the Kamiq has 25% more bhp and 50% more torque (peaking 1000rpm lower) than the 1.4 Qubo.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the Qubo, i like them well enough and am absolutely fine with a van based car rather than a Kamiq (we used to have a Peugeot Partner Combi as a family car, it was great!), but I wonder if the Qubo might be a bit small?. Maybe go up a size to the Doblo (also available with the 1.4 petrol, albeit with 95bhp rather than 77)?

Both the Qubo and the Peugeot Bipper are more useful for carrying 4 large adults comfortably in something with the footprint of a Fiesta.

Even with the back seats out, they are a bit too small to carry the kind of things which are awkward in a normal hatchback like bikes. Some of our guys had the van versions of these at work for a while and hated them over the larger Kangoo, Partner etc. as there wasn't enough space in the back of them even for a basic set of tools, spares and an PPPE bag without everything getting lost under everything else.

I'd recommend going for one of the slightly larger ones instead like the Berlingo, Combo Life etc. Also, unless you need the back seats, why not just get the van version instead, the ply lining is far better suited to piling bikes etc in the back than carpet and windows.

I think Ian_SW has it.

The Qubo/Bipper/Nemo filled a perceived gap after the original Partner/Berlingo vans and their car equivalents were replaced by substantially larger models in 2008/9.

In practice, at least as cars, the gap was illusory.

When, in 2015, our 2005 Berlingo Multispace had money pit sized problems I looked at Bippers. While the post 2008 Berlingo/Partners were indeed significantly bigger, the Biipper was a wee bit too small for bikes etc. Also, like a base model seventies Mini, it was light on trim with rubber floor coverings instead of carpets and other cheap/nasty/under specc'd stuff

A Skoda Roomster fitted the bill better in there/then time.
