MOT advisories - FoxyJukebox
When checking the condition of cars prior to purchase, I always investigate MOT history. Advisories are always interesting.
Just seen a VW Tiguan that passed its MOT with an advisory of 2 nails in rear tyre -2023 and one nail in rear tyre for its 2024 test( pass).
Now then-surely that should have been an instant fail?

You'd think so but not sure the tester's manual bears it out.

I’ve noticed this before.

The first time, years ago, when my daughter was brought home from Uni in an old Ka I spotted a nail despite a recent MoT. The spare was borderline so I politely insisted on getting the nailed tyre replaced right away at my expense rather than them returning four up on the motorway. As it happened the driver paid me back a few days later.

The second occasion a neighbour got a MoT advisory decided not to bother having a nailed tyre repaired on a performance Audi.

I assume the reality is that a firmly embedded, non-leaking nail is almost as secure as a plug repair but I wouldn’t risk it.

There’s no dedicated section to fail a car for debris/ nails in tyres for the mot test. So it can only be an advisory.

One thing that caught my eye in the manual linked above :

"Tyres over ten years old at the time of the test must be failed if they are on any front-steered axle" OR "not displaying a date code".. Is this a recent addition ?

>Is this a recent addition ?

It looks like legislation was introduced on 1st February 2021.

"Tyres over ten years old at the time of the test must be failed if they are on any front-steered axle".

Expect to see bottom protecting MoT testers adding "Tyres getting old" to the list together with:

- Brake pads wearing

- Discs wearing

- Engine cover fitted

- Undertray fitted

- There's an R in the month

the ten year rule has been there a while but it’s not for private cars.
