Hi all,

Wonder if anyone on this forum has had any dealings with carautionbuyingservice.co.uk's Mr Simon Frikking?

Looking to buy a grade 1 Tesla from BCA auction. If someone else has a motor trade account, maybe can help with BCA cap prices before I pay Simon to source the car....

Any help will be much appreciated.

Regards

A

I can't actually answer the question, but my understanding is that auctions are definitely not the place for bargains they once were.

The question you should be asking yourself is why a "grade 1" Tesla would end up at an auction in the first place, rather than being retailed? (i.e, what is wrong with it?)

Of course another question could/should be, what legal protection do i have if something major goes wrong with a car buy from auction?. Because AFAIK you get virtually none.

Up to you, but I wouldn't go anywhere near something like that from auction.

I’d be interested in who your contract would be with.

If you’re buying it as a retail customer from the above intermediary company - it’s their name at the top of the invoice - then presumably you’re covered by the usual consumer rights. And if you haven’t visited their premises it’d also be classed as a distance sale - so a right to return it within 14(?) days.

But if you’re paying BCA direct, then I’d guess you’re more on your own so far as back up if anything goes wrong.

From watching the trade comment on BCA gradings, sometimes they can be a little‘optimistic’.

The website is operated by Car Auction Buying Services Limited, whose only Director is Simon Firkins.

Established in 2001, it has called up share capital of £1.00 according to it's second year accounts, the latest available, registered at Companies House. How much are you going to give it to buy a car for you? Probably a bit more than that!!?

Think it was established in 2021. However, I agree with what Leaseman has said.

If it sounds too good to be true........

Having been a regular visitor to auctions over the years I can absolutely advise against buying anything there, sharks lurk here. Most cars are there for a reason, the only vehicles worth touching are ex fleet stock so you need to be aware of where the car has come from. If it has been sent by a dealer and it’s on the surface a good retailable car with sensible miles then you have to ask why it has been sent to auction instead of flogged from the lot - the dealer I worked for only ever sent faulty cars to auction. If it looks good then there’s almost certainly a costly fault lurking, a mileage discrepancy or no service history. Something will be wrong. The auction descriptions are rarely accurate, you need to see it in the metal.

Prices are higher than expected and you have zero comeback in most cases. I’ve known of these car buying guys and most offer no guarantees, they are simply buying a car on your behalf using their account to save on fees. I wouldn’t use one, but I’m not making any suggestion this firm or individual is bad in any way. I was often asked to do this as a trader back in the day but I refused as I wouldn’t put my name to a car that I wasn’t selling with a warranty or personal guarantee and in order to do this I needed to retail it with a decent margin and take the time to have it checked over by the workshop I used.

When buying an expensive car like this it’s better to pay a bit more and buy an approved used example with a manufacturer backed warranty.

Not sure you'll get many Grade 1 cars. They are rare.

The vast majority of Teslas at auction are direct ex-fleet cars so genuine enough but once the hammer comes down it is yours. No comeback, no questions. Know what you are doing before you get involved.

In general there are plenty of nice cars at auction from all sorts of sources but there are many more horrible ones. You need to know what you are doing and accept the consequences when you get it wrong (which even the most experienced buyer does sometimes).
