Fird fiesta 07 - Suspicious car(or it’s just me!) - Draig goch
Evening all, recently bought a nice runaround ford fiesta 07 private sale. Owner did not have the v5, so i applied for a new one, no problem, the notes on the new v5 state the car was salvaged due to structural damage, but declared suitable for repair.did not know this before buying. Within a week the ns front tyre went flat despite having a new tyre prior to the sale, took it to the local garage and they said inner rim was badly damaged and unrepairable. Found a replacement so that’s ok, my worry is all though it has an MOT, how can I find out what the damage was? Also strange there was no V5 at the time, any advice appreciated thanks

First thing I would ask, did you do any checks on the vehicle before purchasing?

Only the basics, but upon reading the mot failure it failed on the wheel I mentioned, but then had a pass, seems odd to me

Did the MOT relate to the wheel or tyre? Either way, I assume it was either adequately repaired for the MOT or a different tester had a more generous view.

In all likelihood, your car was written off, then bought from the salvage company (probably Copart) by someone who fixed it up and sold it on to you. They wouldn't have a V5 as the previous owner probably didn't supply it to the salvager.

If you bought the car from a dealer, I suggest you take it back on the grounds they didn't tell you it's a write off. If you bought it privately, you have pretty much zero recourse.

I presume it cost a few hundred quid. Personally, I would get the V5 then stick it on eBay or similar with the Cat S declared. I wouldn't personally want to drive around in an old write off, but someone else might, or a farmer may want to thrash around.

The wheels may have the wrong offset (ET) value and so are rubbing when the steering is turned too far. Alternatively, the wrong suspension springs may have been fitted so the ride height is incorrect.

Doesn’t help yourself, but this serves as a reminder to never never buy a car without a V5. Dodgy traders masquerading as private punters often say there’s no V5 to hide that they’re not the cars registered keeper or as in this case to hide mention of it being a structural write-off. Avoid at all costs if a V5 showing the sellers current address can’t be presented by any private seller.
