I've become strangely obsessed with his videos. Overall I think he does more bad than good as he (yes I know it's illegal but illegal doesn't always= wrong) almost almost "targets" stationary drivers on their phones and tries to passive aggressively agitate them because he knows confrontation= clicks. I think this is ironic as he claims to care about road safety but trying to agitate and humiliate drivers must surely put them in a state that means they're unfit to drive?

To be clear I have nothing against people going after genuinely dangerous drivers. If you see someone on the phone while driving (not stationary) I wouldn't blame you for reporting them

Anyway I wanted to know the general consensus here. Cycling mikey and his ilk, good or bad?

Wholly good.

There's no excuse to be operating a car and looking at a phone simultaneously, stationary or not. Virtually all modern cars are fitted with bluetooth hands-free. Those that dont can be retrofitted for a small cost. Carplay/Android Auto and voice recognition are increasingly common too.

One gets in a car to drive it to their chosen destination, safely. Not flick through TikTok.

My biggest problem is the confrontation. He argues that stationary phone use is dangerous due to "cognitive overload" and it distracts drivers when they're in motion. If he shouts at people "6 points, I'm reporting you to the police" imo this engenders more cognitive overload and distraction than using a phone

Seen a few of his videos and don't mind him.

Far better than Jeremy Vine's bike videos which show he has no understanding of the rules of the road. In his book, cyclists seem to be wholly innocent every time they (he) has a run in with a driver.

Strangely I don't mind him on his radio or TV shows but one he gets on a bike he seems to change into an i****

Personally, I'm uneasy about him posting those videos for clicks and revenue. However, he does apply the rules of the road to himself: in a recent-ish video he jumped a red light by mistake and published the video (although I'm not certain as to whether he reported himself to the police).

As a driver who took cycling back up a few years ago, I can sympathise, but only up to a point. I have no problem in him reporting bad driving behaviour as long as he himself behaviour properly when cycling, and deliberately trying to rile up drivers for clicks and possibly YT ad revenue is not appropriate.

There is a big difference between naive / low ability (how they pass their driving test, I don't know) drivers and those who deliberately cut corners safety-wise, whether out of neglect (including time pressures) or deliberate act because they 'hate' cyclists or 'for a larf' (especially with 'mates' to 'impress').

When I was out cycling along parts of some rural A roads (I was forced to by road closures of my normal country lanes) about a week ago, I was nearly knocked off my bicycle three times in the space of a 2-3 mile stretch because car and van drivers were driving irresponsibly when overtaking, despite me not holding them up very much. Compared to some cyclists, I try to be as accommodating as possible in that regard.

I often see most of the bad driving - including people on their phones, eating/drinking or (yes) women putting on make-up whilst driving on urban roads or roads between towns, rather than countryside roads.

I was on a long run down to Finchingfield (Essex) last weekend, which is VERY popular with bikers due to the plethora of roads nearby that are liked by speed merchants (very dangerous in itself, having been overtaken many times that day by motorbikes doing well in excess of the speed limit).

Many appear to come up from London, etc just for this and turn the normally sleepy village into a veritable biker town, with all the noise, etc that comes with it. Not exactly pleasant for everyone else.

Most of Cycling Mikey's earlier videos were filmed at the notorious "Gandalf Corner", where some drivers decide to "nip past" a row of patiently queuing drivers by slipping into the opposite lane to make a right turn. While it is a source of satisfaction to see these types of drivers get their come-uppance, it strikes me that a better road layout would alleviate the problem - a NO ENTRY sign and a camera to catch rogue drivers would eliminate the habit.
I'm not particularly bothered by drivers playing on their phones at the wheel of a stationary car (car in neutral with handbrake on - who cares if the engine is ticking over for a minute or two?) in a queue or traffic jam, as it is surely no more distracting than smoking or re-tuning the radio or having an argument with a passenger, but those doing it on the move deserve everything they get. It's a habit that somehow needs to be "un-learnt" and made as socially unacceptable as drink-driving or speeding.

Yes I agree. I'm guessing it isn't a specific criminal offense but perhaps shouting at and belittling drivers with taunts of "six points" "you're going on YouTube" etc should be illegal too. As I said up thread this must be more distracting and cognitively overloading than using their phones. If you're trying to agitate and stress out drivers then you're surely putting them in a state of driving that's more likely to cause a crash

I work as a truck driver and it's wild how many drivers I see on their phones in motion. Sometimes on the motorway or by schools at closing / opening time. I couldn't care less about people using their phones while stationary but phone use in motion is infuriating

Confrontation and an angry response = more clicks = more money.

It would be easy to doubt his real motives!

I've changed my mind.

I watched a few more of his videos on YouTube last night and while I find the different reactions of the drivers he targets entertaining, I dislike his holier-than-thou attitude, and that South African accent really grates on me now.

In one recent video he was deliberately cycling up and down the same bit of road road to "catch" drivers unaware. Get a job/life springs to mind.

Get a job/life springs to mind.

He is doing his job - he will be making plenty of money from his videos and if he does not get 'interesting' content then his money goes down so he always needs to keep posting more videos.

Indeed - doing that sort of thing, his luck is bound to run out. He'll certainly be VERY famous then! Or should I say infamous. He'd only have himself to blame.

In a similar vein, I have seen videos made bycar drivers with dashcams who are on the look-out for any confrontational situation to sensationalise their footage. Like if they're driving along in town and someone pulls out in front of them, possibly requiring them to ease off the accelerator slightly, instead they accelerate, slam on the brakes and hoot their horn angrily.

This could be called "nearly crash for likes" !!

It's easy to see why he has been active for so long.

It's possible to look up an estimate of how much any youtube channel makes.

I take it that the gross figure is for the 15 years he has been active.

Continuing with the youtube earnings theme, the top earners stats are unbelievable.

It's not a channel I have ever heard of or would wish to watch, but millions of people obviously do.

He started posting back in the noughties as 'bent mikey' as he rode a recumbent bike.

One of his most viewed was a Darwin Award candidate up the nearside of a moving artic.

Indeed and in those days he posted educational videos - I.e. encouraging cyclists to avoid left turning vehicles and taking the lane at pinch points. He’s now moved to a more militant position. I think this has got to do with some personal tragedy he suffered - father killed by drunk driver.

I used to follow him on Twitter and broadly supported him.

But one day he was plainly in the wrong and he just instantly blocked me for saying so.
