Dacia - Pay to get access to CPU - galileo

Chatting to my trusted local Independent today, I gathered that in order to access the systems on a 2013 Dacia to fix a lighting issue there was a fee to pay to Dacia.

This kind of thing is becoming more common, he says, reminiscent of the former reluctance to give independents technical information, which I think was outlawed as anti-competitive.

Presumably they can now charge what they like for data and unlocking systems.

Think you’ll find it’s worse than this . Most manufacturers are now using Sgw ( secure gateway) . So basic functions, like changing brake pads , need access to the manufacturers on line portal for the diagnostic system to function. This comes at a cost .

When my present 10 year old wheels need replacement I may seriously consider getting a classic, even though it will need frequent attention to contact breaker points, carburettor(s) and all the other things that kept me busy every weekend back in the day.

Such is life, my daughter envies me my advanced age because I'll be dead before things get really bad and she'll outlive me and have to suffer. Cynical due to my upbringing, I suspect.

No need to go that far Galileo, get yourself a middle aged Toyota (which won't go wrong anyway :-) and a copy of Techstream from the usual auction site, job done.

Unfortunately being as much use as a cow with a gun i had to get our IT guru to install it properly on an old laptop kept solely for that purpose, you being a dozen or more times smarter than i won't have any issues.

Maybe a question of degree. Refusing to supply a workshop manual is anti-competetive, charging for one is not. So how much to access online info would seem to matter.

Sometimes its a question of culture.

Here (in Taiwan) they seem not to have heard of workshop manuals. The local mechanic who used to sometimes come and look over my shoulder when I was fiddling with the Skywing was very impressed, though I suspect him of making the sign agin the Evil Eye, and muttering "Tis flyin' in't Face O Nature" in the Taiwanese equivalent of a South Devon accent behind my back.
