I drive a boring petrol Hyundai i30 which nobody wants to steal. It's been parked outside my house for at least 4 years (except when I use it !!). Just over 70 years old, retired, 5000 miles pa, insured by Aviva for at least 7 years now. No claims bonus stretching back to 1997. Clean licence until 3 points last year for 24mph in 20 limit.

Its renewal time and Aviva write: " We're sorry to inform you that due to our underwriting rules, we are unable to offer you a renewal quote for car XYX 123 this year. Our inability to invite you to renew should not be considered as an insurance refusal or cancellation and does not need to be disclosed ... etc etc."

PS Curiously they seem happy enough to give a new online quote but its around £300 more than the best quote which is from Tesco.

Curious, irritating and . . .stuff em !

You could try LV - my 81yo dad changed to them about 5 years ago or so after having a (very cheap) staff retiree policy with Axa (formerly Guardian for him) for years, when they jacked up the price even for him. Seems happy with his current provider, and by all accounts LV appear to have a decent reputation.

Worth a look (if they aren't part of the ones you've already checked out, possibly via a 'screensc***er' website like Confused), along with Direct Line, who never partner with screensc***er firms and you have to go through their website/phone for a quote.

I'm (around 50, and a similar car, though likely older at 18yo) currently with QuoteMeHappy, though if I recall, they are a subsidiary of Aviva, so they may also decline or not be competitive for you, though they are very much so for me, having dropped my premium from esure about 4 years ago by 20% and remained cheap.

I've not had to claim from either, so I don't know what that experience would be like.

Try GA, the online Aviva company.

I am with LV - 2012 Honda CRV

1st year £96 after £70 off via Money Saving Expert

2nd year £184

3rd Year £204

4th Year £275

A week later bought a 23 reg Honda CRV and the £275 became £350

26 days till my renewal date and I am sure it will soar! Despite no claims, no points, high excess etc etc

Looks like it could be >>£500 as that is about the cheapest I can see on the internet. No claims just getting older, 78 this year. They put 33% on my house & contents insurance this month.

but who are in the process of setting up a brand that will be on comparison sites ...

I also read in the last few days that insurance companies in the UK in general lost 11-12% last year on motor business.

I also read in the last few days that insurance companies in the UK in general lost 11-12% last year on motor business.

With an estimated one million uninsured drivers on UK roads, the likelihood of being involved in an accident with one isn't minimal, resulting in higher claims costs and higher premiums. With higher premiums, I suspect more drivers will risk driving uninsured.

That nice mister Starmer's going to put everything right.

Thanks for the tips, but I've already trawled the net (with a net ?) to find the best quote for me. What baffles me is them turning me away as a renewal but seemingly OK with me as a new customer. Has the recent existing/new client legislation turned things upside down and inside out I wonder ?

Had the same experience . The companies are reevaluating their risks so first step is to decline the renewal quote and ask you to get a re quote.

In my case this would have cost me over £500 but LV honoured their quote and allowed me to renew.

This sets them apart from some of the companies popping up on the comparison sites especially when you check them out on Trustpilot.

Very much on line with the Which report which now rates LV the most overall recommended company overtaking NFU for the first time.

Indeed - NFU are apparently very good on customer service, but it doesn't come cheap by all accounts. I recall when I was looking in the past, both when I changed from RAC to esure in the early 2000s and from esure to QMH about 4 years or so ago, the quotes on the screensc***er websites for NFU consistently came in at double that of the top 10-15 cheapest ones, at around £600 or so.

LV appear to be more competitively prices, certainly not the cheapest, but not bad at all. I suppose it come down to the assessing the risk to how often you need to claim, even if it's not a fault claim.

Some insurers don't want to insure specific cars for reasons unknown to customers.

Direct Line won't insure Kia Sportage Hybrid - no explanation given why.

Is there any truth in insurers refusing to cover Range Rovers and RR Evoke because of their easily overridden security systems.

Apparently this has forced JLR to offer their own insurance.

Apparently this has forced JLR to offer their own insurance.

I saw an article a few months ago regarding this and it started at about £150 a month for a poverty model.

Apparently only in London .

Around here it’s around £2750 per annum for a new RRover
