Volvo Xc40 T3 Momentum - Clutch problem - hartyscribbles

I had a scary experience last weekend. I had just joined a motorway when my three-year-old car with 30,000 miles on the clock started to jump from one gear to another without warning. My dashboard told me it was in 5th gear then 2nd, then to 6th and back to 3rd. Luckily there was a nearby exit slip road and I managed to get to the hard shoulder. A friend later googled Volvo clutches and found a posting in 2021 from a man called Dazzler who had suffered a similar experience in the same model as mine. Interestingly his was first registered in September, 2020, the same month mine was first registered. I have been quoted £2,385 for a replacement clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder by the Volvo dealership. I wondered if anyone else out there has had a similar incident with this Volvo model and what was the outcome ? I have been driving for more than 50 years and I have never had a clutch problem before.

I can't think how a manual gearbox can change gears by itself. But this model does seem to have clutch problems at low mileages. Interestingly, there is an old post on a Volvo forum about just the same problem!

I wonder if the OP is the same as the VolvoOP? Although probably not, as if you scroll down the unfortunate XC40 owner eventually had to have an engine replacement!

A standard 3 pedal car with a manual gearbox cant shift gears by itself. However , the digital shift indicator on the dash has probably thrown a wobbly and cant figure out what's going on. Im sure the job could be done a lot cheaper using quality parts like Valeo or Luc, which are likely the makers to be fitted from new .Volvo dont make clutches.

I must be missing something here, I’ve read this post several times and I can’t see where the op, says it’s a manual..

Mention of clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder suggest manual but I guess if it's an the automatic is a mechanised manual it's a possibility.

XC40 autos were all 8 speed TC autos, Geartronic was the name used.

When we drove one for 2 days it was without a doubt the best TC box I have ever used.

But the T3 was available as a manual so I guess that is what the OP has.

But I simply cannot see how it can change gear by itself.

I don't see how it can either but if there's an indicator on the instrument panel it could get 'confused'.

If it is a manual, then it's a known problem.

Plenty of examples unfortunately on the Facebook page Volvo XC40 Owners.

Initially Volvo refused to accept that there was a problem leaving owners to fork out thousands of pounds for repairs.

Now there seems to be a reluctant acceptance by Volvo, but only if the owner pushes the matter. Several owners have now had the clutch and flywheel replaced under warranty.

What really confuses me is the fact that the dash says 5th to 2nd and then 6th to 3rd yet the OP does not mention the sudden increase in revs such a change in ratios would cause.

If that is really the case logic suggests to me its a simple sensor problem and the dash is displaying the wrong number.
