My first posting and I am stuck. Would appreciate some help.

Did a regular engine oil / filter change after 7 months and c. 6000 miles. Engine is clean, 60k miles and oil and filter usually changed twice a year. No sediment in the old oil.

I was day dreaming and mistakingly overfilled slightly. Opened the sump plug to drain the excess oil and nothing. No signs of any sediment. And nothing has fallen in whilst filling.

Prodded around the sump hole with wire. And ran the car 5 minutes to warm the oil. Made no difference.

Filler cap was undone. Ive removed the new filter and housing and refitted. Made no difference.

No oil warning light showing but the engine is making that noise due to the overfilling. So I really want to drain the excess.

I’d be immensely grateful for any suggestion as to how to resolve this.

Thanks

Can’t see how that’s possible. Have you checked the dipstick to see if there’s any oil in the engine ?
Xsara Picasso 2008 petrol - Help - Engine oil won’t drain - Picasso2008
Yes. Dipstick shows as being overfilled with the new, clean oil. I’m baffled. This is my only Citroen and I was hoping they had some known gremlin that causes this.

Are you sure you’re undoing the correct plug ?
Xsara Picasso 2008 petrol - Help - Engine oil won’t drain - Picasso2008
100% sure, albeit I appreciate the obvious question. I tried to think if I’d missed something obvious. I’ve been playing with engines and farm machinery for 50 years and we all miss something stupid occasionally,

It’s the same plug I drained the old oil from 20 minutes earlier and I’ve done several oil changes on this car. I’ve just been out and blown up with the compressor but no difference. Also drove around the yard, a few hard brakes and turns to see if that dislodged some air or muck. It does feel a bit like an air lock albeit I don’t see how that’s possible. I appreciate your comments.

Get an oil suck pump and pull any excess oil out through the dipstick tube .

This isna wind up

Xsara Picasso 2008 petrol - Help - Engine oil won’t drain - Picasso2008
Sadly this isn’t a wind up. I note the comments but it’s not a plastic bag (unless it’s been in there several years) and certainly not Sunflower oil!

The sump hasn’t been off during my ownership. The car has been serviced meticulously. I left it parked pointing up for a night, pointing down for a night. The oil still isn’t draining. I’m also now wondering if I’ve not overfilled per se - I know that sounds strange. I filled with 4 litres and the recommended is 3.3-35. It’s now showing as more overfilled on the dipstick that on day one.

I’ll contact Citroen and see if there’s a technical helpline. Or just remove the sump and see what I find. I’ve changed oil literally hundred of times - cars, tractors, diggers, bikes. Never had this before. Then again I’ve never owned a French speaking car before.

Another crack on Sunday.

Thanks

The dipstick shows there is plenty of oil in the sump - that's where the dipstick goes - but it stays there when the plug is removed ? When you poke a clean stick into the plughole, what does it show ? Have you discovered anti-gravity oil ? 'Overfilling' by half a litre isn't usually a risk !

Glitch in The Matrix manifesting as a Local Gravitational Anomaly.

Not sure the car is new enough to be quite that broken though.

Polythene bag in your sump?

Using sunflower oil instead of motor oil could also cause this, but it would take time for the oil to gel.

Since you say youve probed the drain port, I suppose the next (logical?) move (apart from the pump out already suggested) would be to attempt blowdown by pressurising via the filler port, but you would need access to compressed air.

I would also lodge a technical query with Citroen, directly or via a main dealer.

This is one case where I would actually take my car to a dealer, which I didn't think I would ever say. I'd want to have some means of video recording though, possibly clandestinely.

Seriously, IF this is genuine, and you find out what it was, let us know.

Get a very large container, a plastic suit and some goggles. Then drop the entire sump.

Ive done this on a Lada with a jammed and rounded drain plug, which I then drilled out on't bench. (Ironically, its shiny new replacement was never used, since the car never got another oil change)

Wasn't a big deal, (didn't spill a drop) but I suppose it could be with an overfilled Citroen.

IIRC (long time ago, when cars, even Citroens, were mechanical devices with a simple purpose, and the space-time continium was intact) I supported the sump on a scissor jack, then lowered it slowly and carefully once I'd got an obstructing crossmember off. I needed another scissor jack to nudge the engine sideways to clear something.

I had some cardboard boxes flattened as disaster containment but didn't need them, which was just as well, since they probably wouldn't have been adequate.

Think I might have had the sump in a bin bag too. I'd guess I bulldog-clipped this to the sump flange once I'd got it to part, but I cant really remember.

.....overfilled slightly........ ..... oil and filter usually changed twice a year.

Why? Bit OTT these days.

Opened the sump plug to drain the excess oil and nothing....

Makes no sense....unless the car was upside down, or the new oil had immediately drained out of the plugless sump.

... but the engine is making that noise due to the overfilling

What noise is that? 'Overfilling slightly' is unlikely to change the engine sound; most manufacturers allow some leeway for error.

Possibly an episode of mental confusion resulted in the sump plug being replaced after rather than before refilling with a 5 litre can of oil, forgetting the intention to retain approx half a litre, so the new oil immediately drained into presumably a large receptacle or a hole in the ground, thus creating the illusion of overfilling plus the reality of an empty sump. Thus running the engine with no oil for 5 minutes might explain 'that noise'; but doesn't explain the lack of an oil warning light, unless it was faulty and failed to warn. The dipstick would show a coating of clean oil if not wiped.

Before the rush. Its quite likely to become a pilgrimage site. Amulets with vials of the miraculous oil, coach parties, charter flights from Saudi Arabia.
