Annual Insurance due shortly and after 60 plus years NCD minor bump 3 years ago NCD down rock bottom. Age into high 80

Looking at comparison sites seems ageism being well truly applied faced with four fiqure annual Insurance.by all the so called Main Insurers.

Any one out there can direct me to a company that may deal sympatheically with my wallet?

I think it helps if old classic people who don't move as much as they did drive old classic cars which don't move as much as they did.

My 18yr old Audi A8 w12 sport quattro costs less than £300 with Swinton for up to 3000 miles a year. My 44yr old TR7 costs less than £100 with Performance Direct for up to 1000 miles IIRC. But I'm not quite 75 yet.

I insure my 1991 Pug 205 with Adrian Flux @ £200 - they have an arrangement with Club Peugeot UK. For an elderly car (and driver) of little value, very little is saved with TPFT, so that is fully Comp.

Your quote from Swinton for the A8 is amazing John.

How on earth did they find a company to insure a high performance car like yours for such a small premium ?

My e320 cost over double with all the companies I tried apart from the not to be recommended list found on a comparison website.

Please can you help me to follow your example please ?

Possibly. I turned 80 last year and my renewal with Direct Line went from £350 to £615. I did the comparisons - LV= wouldn't cover me at all, the rest wanted about £90 more. I have a good record with full NCD. I drive a 15year old auto Vauxhall Agila B.

Have found Saga to be unbeatable on price and product for our two vehicles (Audi A3 Sportback/Hyundai i10 Premium) over the past three years. The most recent renewal (March '24) increased by just £17.00 – quite unbelievable in today's climate!!!

I'm 73, don't cover more than 10,000 per annum over both vehicles, one garaged, one driveway, maximum NCD, fully comp, Mrs RB named driver on both but has never used the Audi. Full breakdown cover standard on the Hyundai if you have it serviced with a main agent, which I do. Pay £110 for full breakdown on the Audi but serviced by a fantastic indy 30-miles away. No other extras...

...wasn't, however, very impressed with their recent quote for B&C insurance cover (due mid-July) at +£250.00 more than my current insurer wants, so won't be taking them up on that.

Good hunting...

Has anyone else over 75 experienced LV refusing to quote ?

I get the impression that they are reconfiguring their computer model which may affect elderly drivers. First companies they refused to insure old Honda Jazz and cars with easy to access cats , cars which are often chosen by this sector of the market .

4 years ago, aged 73, I took up the LV offer via Money Saving Expert - £96 (£70 off) for Comprehensive on my 2012 CRV EX auto.

£184 renewal the following year

£204 the next again year

Last year the renewal was £275 BUT I then changed my car the following week - 2023 CRV EX Hybrid and the added £75 making the annual premium £350

Dreading August renewals as my 2 sons living in Scotland has seen their premiums increasing 50-60% in the last year. They went elsewhere for their insurance paying slightly more with "known insurers" and avoiding huge increases.

Being 77, my choices are limited as many insurers do not want oldies, They do not refuse to quote, merely quote premiums up to £3,000!

Driving nearly 60 years and never claimed unless a it was Windscreen or 3rd party was to blame and my insurer got their costs from the 3rd party insurer. Small, self inflicted damage was just paid out of my pocket as they have been trivial and anyway, below the excess.

Last year my LV premium was 425 (i30 1.4 2009) which for this urban West Yorkshire postcode seems reasonable for an 80 year old.

This year, I'm 81, changed car to a 2015 1.0 litre i10, premium is up about 60%, but 300 less than the comparison sites, on which LV and many other companies will not even quote.

I'm nearly 79 and drive a 14-reg Mazda CX-5. I have not made a claim on my car insurance for over 30 years, apart from windscreens.

I have been insured with General Accident for the last few years. Last year's premium was £397, this year's £449. I did the usual round of comparison sites, the cheapest result from which was £524. Direct Line was over £900.

Last year I put different ages into the comparison sites and the difference was amazing. I came to the conclusion that, once you're past 75, the premiums will shoot up and there's not much you can do about it.

I sort out the insurance for my father-in-law who was 90 this year.

He drives a 2016 Fiat Panda and has a good no-claims history.

Last year his premium was around £670.00. This year they wanted £1,100!

Best offer on the comparison sites was Axa at £940.00.

He needs to stay driving as we live in a small village and he needs to get to the local town to visit his wife in the care home so had to suck up the increase.

Putting an older additional named driver on a young person’s policy used to work in reducing premiums. It presumably still works. I wonder if the opposite applies in putting a middle aged named driver on an elderly driver’s policy?

Insurance for elderly - Steveieb

Certainly does in my case. I was advised to leave my daughter on my insurance as a named driver even with business cover !

I was surprised to see John F s renewal figure for his Audi A8 . That’s amazing . Wish I had the same quote for my E320 which must be in a similar group.

But I had no luck with Saga who are I believe cater for the over 50 s.

Don't think so, adding my 49 year old daughter would have increased the premium by £200 when I talked to LV about my renewal.

The statistics tinyurl.com/yc25yhmd (gov.uk site) do show a rapidly increasing accident rate with age. JohnF has a low maximum annual mileage for his premiums which may be a key factor.

Insurance for elderly - Terry W

The accident rate increases rapidly for those 70+ - by age 85 exceeds 17-24 year olds.

It is likely the main reason old folk stop driving is increasing infirmity - eyesight, judgement, reactions etc. Sometimes, perhaps with family encouragement, it will be voluntary.

Often it will be a few accidents/incidents (even minor) evidencing an inability to drive safely.

Higher premiums are inevitable - insurance companies will not cover bad risks unless the premiums are sufficiently high.

You may find (unless you've already done so) that adding a middle-aged, son or daughter (or equivalent, e.g. niece / nephew perhaps) to your policy as a 'named additional driver' reduces, the premium somewhat, as long as they have a clean record for both claims and driving points within the last 5 years at least.

Worth adding them on for emergency purposes in case you are taken ill (but not sufficient to need a hospital visit) and cannot drive home.

I started doing this after I bought my first car back in the late 90s in my 20s and have done up until my dad turned 75 or so, when it was not financially advantageous, so I put my younger sister on instead, for a 10% drop in the premium and for genuine emergency purposes.

My dad has now put my sister on his / my mum's policy for the same reasons, now that both are 80+. Worth seeing if it makes a positive difference, whichever insurers you look at.

I am only 76 and put my 42 year old son on (10 years NCD). No difference,
