Toyota Prius - Hybrid battery - Aurelius7

Evening.

Firstly, I apologise if this question has already been asked. Secondly, I know very little about cars, so I apologise if this question is a stupid one.

I'm looking to buy my first car at the grand old age of 41. As previously mentioned, my knowledge of cars is very low. I want a car to be able to explore the UK and beyond, with my wife and two daughters. I hear a lot from people about them having to constantly pay out for repairs, or horror stories of being broken down hundreds of miles from home, so obviously I want something reliable.

After googling away for a few hours it seems that Toyota's are known for their reliability, so I told myself I'd get a Toyota. It's for my family so no Yaris's or Aygo's. After looking on Money Saving Expert, they say that although there is an expensive up front cost, hybrids are cheap to run. So now I know which model Toyota I'll get, the Prius (Corrolla hybrids are too expensive for me).

When I tell a few people about what I'm looking for I'm being told to steer away from hybrids because the batteries will end up needing to be replaced and your looking at thousands of pounds to replace them. That's thrown a right curveball at me as I was quite chuffed looking at Auto Express and finding a 2008 Prius for just under £6k, but apparently I'll be paying out for a battery.

So my questions to you guys are, how likely is it that the battery will die? Is this a common occurence in hybrids? more importantly is this a common occurence in Toyota's hybrids? will purchasing a Prius with full service history make any difference to the length of battery life (i suspect not, but again, I'm by no means an expert).

Apologies for the long post, and thank you in advance for any replies.

16 year battery warranty if Toyota serviced (Google 30 seconds.)

Toyotas are reliable and Priuses are no exception. There is no particular issue with their hybrid batteries. However, ai would be wary of buying a car from 2008. You would be better spending your money, if that's your budget, on something newer and simpler.

Yup - especially considering that rust is a potential problem with Toyotas of this age. As suggested go newer and simpler.

I too wouldn't want a car that complicated that old, its not just the battery involved here, the electronics and hybrid drive system could cost serious money for any issues.

A Toyota is as good a choice as any, but unless you can up the budget to get a hybrid less than 10 years old and with proven history (these cars are the taxi of choice after all) i'd be more inclined to go simpler.

Maybe an Auris or Avensis with petrol engine, estates in particular are great for family use.

Older Toyota Prius, Prius Plus & Auris hybrids especially the estate version will highly likely have been used as a mini cab & these will not be disposed of until an expensive repair bill is on the horizon.

All of the above can also be expensive to insure due to catalytic convertor theft issue, check before committing to buying one.

The last of the Auris could also be had with a 1.2 petrol turbo engine, these to can be problematic & best avoided.

Volvo v70d is a good bet, loads around, get everything in one and good mpg. Mine's just past 190k.

I like them but don't they need a Volvo specialist if something electrical goes wrong? I heard that they need Volvo specific diagnostics.

Could you expand on that please, an Auris 1.2 estate is one of several possibles depending on which way we go.

I thought the Auris suffering from cat theft was the hybrid, are the pure petrol versions still a known target?

I am a member of the Touota club forum for years, I never saw a problem eith the 1.2 turbo units, the opposite owners rev about the reliability. I hd a an Auris 1.2 as a loan car from a dealer once, it felt less snappy than the Avensis 1.8 but only marginally.
