Audi Q2 - Problem with Audi Dealership - Martin Woolf

Hi,

I purchased an Approved used Audi Q2 last September, the MOT was due in March this year. I asked the dealership if they would MOT the car before purchase, but they said they only do this if less than 6 months left on MOT, but offered me a free MOT test when due. As Audi boast about their 150 point checks, I wasn't too concerned.

However, come March and the car passed the MOT with the following advisories.

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):

Nearside Front Tyre slightly damaged/cracking or perishing (5.2.3 (d) (ii))

Nearside Rear Tyre slightly damaged/cracking or perishing (5.2.3 (d) (ii))

Offside Rear Tyre slightly damaged/cracking or perishing (5.2.3 (d) (ii))

I can't help thinking that the cracks were there when I purchased the car, but it's difficult to prove. If the car had been MOT'd at the time, I wouldn't have bought the car without the tyres being changed.

The previous MOT only showed a tyre close to Legal Limit, which was replaced.

Do you think I have cause to complain? The car has only covered 2000 miles between purchase and Mot, although I realise that cracking is not totally dependent on mileage.

Has there been a change to the MOT in regards to listing Advisories on tyres?

Free mot is often a license to create unnecessary work. Think I’d take it to an independent tyre specialist and ask for their opinion. Doubt if you’ll get any help from the Audi dealer . All they want to do is sell you new tyres. Mot tyre regulations haven’t changed for some time .

Whilst I agree with elekie doctor's view of getting a tyre specialist to look at it, I think there is merit in returning to the Audi garage and having a word with the original salesperson or his manager.

You bought the car on the understanding that it is an Approved Used Audi and you're very disappointed and surprised that the MOT has come back with three advisories, all tyre related. Surely there's something they can do to help?

This would be my approach anyway and it may get you a goodwill gesture in the form of a contribution towards, or reduction in the price of the tyres.

To me it sounds as though the cracks in the tyres are age related, especially if the Q2 has done a low mileage.

The tester doesn't think the cracking affects the safety so no chance of any refund, except perhaps from the tyre manufacturer.

It's only an 'advisory' and you can accept or ignore advice. Have a good look at the tyres and form your own opinion.

I assume from your OP that this is the car's first MoT ? So the tyres are probably as old as the car and will probably show incipient cracking anyway, which a fastidious tester may choose to report ?
