Anyone any idea of the cheapest way to get a 17 year old grandson insured? Any advice appreciated.

Assuming it will be his own car, then it needs to be something not popular with that age group. The lad opposite (now 18) got a Series 3 Land Rover. It's heavy on fuel and a bit of a shock to drive compared to a modern car though.

Put another older driver on the policy as a named driver, this typically lowers premiums. Limit the mileage if applicable and get loads of quotes, possibly including fitting a black box, if said driver is capable of behaving. Cars that are unpopular with teens are often cheaper to insure for young drivers so take image out of the plan and go for something slow and dull if they haven’t already bought a car.

My son is currently taking some driving lessons with his provisional licence. We use Marmalade....This way, we don't need to add him to our existing car insurance. We can keep HIS insurance separate to ours.

Has the 17 year old passed or is he learning?

We have had Marmalade learner insurance on our Yaris for 6 months (two three month blocks) whilst our daughter learns.

Hopefully in a month or so she will have passed and it will be down to looking at options.

Black box probably isn't an option yet as she won't have her own car until later this year when she moves from school to full time employment.
