Finding manufacturer month and year from VIN - New owner
Hi

Is there a way to find both the manufacturer month and year of a European “new” car I am buying? I tried VIN decoder and I think they are configured for American VIN and indicate that 10th digit is the year but that doesn’t make sense as it’s 7 which would mean 2007. Any specific decoder for European cars?

Is this info also stamped somewhere on the car body/engine? Just want to get an idea which month did the car come out of the production line.

The 10th digit is model year, not calendar year - the 2024 model year is typically August 2023 to July 2024 but some makers start/end differently - the build month/week isn't present in the VIN

If you can’t get the vin to decode easily, most components on the car will have a label or date stamped on them . Anything removable without too much difficulty. Ash tray , boot carpet etc will give an approximate date of build . Have you asked the dealership?

Bottom of the seat belt near the B pillar there should be a tag with a date on it.

Correct...it should a sewn in label that will state month and year of manufacture.

Also plastic trim. Remove some (ashtray used to be favourite) and look on the 'hidden' side for a couple of 'clocks'. Each will have a pointer, indicating year and month of manufacture of that part. With 'just in time' provision of parts, it will be as close as anything.

That 'clock' often just shows the version number/date of the tooling, (I was apprenticed in a toolroom that made injection moulding tools).

What's the make?

Some manufacturers have spec build info which will give you exact month of manufacture.

If it's a BMW it will even be on a label under the bonnet.

The make is Renault

A car has many dates coded or explicit on various parts. We haven't been told the make, but the headlamps on my Pug show exact dates, but that is for the lamp, not the car, and they could be replacements anyhow. I know where to find out the date when any recent Pug came off the production line, so you could try the user-group website for your vehicle.

If it’s brand new, an assumption made from your other posts, the dealer through whom it was ordered should have a ‘build week’ - ie the week in which it was built. Especially if it was a factory order and not a car from stock.

The OP only said "new", which I took to mean 'used' ?
