My daughter took her car for its MOT at Halfords.

It passed however they said that the discs are warped - nothing visual but when they put it through their 'machine' it identified that the disc was warped.

I suggested to her that as it passed its MOT it is Halfords looking for work rather than anything serious but as it related to brakes she is a bit worried

Any thoughts

It it has passed the MOT then I would ignore it in this situation.

It the discs are of marginal thickness and/or she is getting any juddering then possibly not.

Would a warped disc show up as pulsing on the brake efficiency test?

Get someone competent to give the brakes a proper service, ie strip clean inspect lube, which ideally should be done every other year at the latest.

Might just be a sticking caliper piston or slider, after a decent service a few good hard brakes to warm things up and deglaze any dsposits of brake pad material that might be sitting on the discs, course if the discs are scabby and /or worn out then get them and the pads changed whilst stripped.

Firstly, I don't think she needs to worry. Warped discs would be annoying before they became dangerous.

Secondly, she should never take her car to Halfords again. They don't know what they're doing and are constantly trying to upsell people with this sort of nonsense. I suspect 'the machine' was a laser level pointed by a 17 year old.

And finally, as GB says, when was it last serviced? If it was done by Halfords or the like, she should probably take it to a proper garage next time and ask them to service the brakes along with the rest.

Did it even show up as an advisory? As Adampr says, it would be noticeable before it became serious. It feels like a slow operating ABS.

A genuinely 'warped' disc will probably be felt as pulsation when stopping the car. I suppose it might be commented on by an MoT tester, but if the brakes are doing their job the wheels will be stationary on the rolling road so pulsation will not occur.

Many years ago I had pulsating brakes at only 12K miles and had the discs skimmed, which cured the problem for a while, but it gradually returned. I can only assume one of the discs varied in hardness. These days pads are harder, so they might well cure the problem by slowly skimming the discs ?

If the car passed the MOT brake test I'm not sure how or why they would test for warped disks, there is no road test and the car is stationary throughout the test so unless they took time to set up the measuring equipment for a job which wasn't needed I'm not sure how they would know.

I have experienced a warped disk, which is more than noticeable, slowing from high speeds there was a definate shake through through the steering wheel. The car was used, but had only done 8,000 miles and I noticed it immediately, disks changed under warranty and all was good.

Mileage? Has daughter noticed any juddering when braking, especially from high speed?

Discs are made of cast iron, so they don't 'warp'. What can happen is an invisible difference in smoothness developing on the shiny working surface causing judder. I had this on my Audi front discs and easily cured it by honing the surface with a carborundum wheel in my ancient black 'n decker. They are now smooth at 75,000 miles with new pads about 5k miles ago.

Agreed. No worries.

With normal driving and occasional derusting with a hammer and old screw driver down the ventilation holes, front discs should last at least 80,000 miles. Ours always have done. I think the scam of advising replacement of discs and pads well before the end of their useful life has become so widespread that it is now considered normal practice.

<< With normal driving and occasional derusting with a hammer and old screw driver down the ventilation holes, front discs should last at least 80,000 miles. Ours always have done. >>

In terms of thickness, discs should certainly last that far. What often happens is that most of the movement in the caliper occurs on one side (usually the outer) with hardly any on the hidden side, which fails to polish the disc. Conscientious MoT testers will advise on this, but as long as the brake does its job the car will pass. In time the hidden side of the disc will be so scored that it will need replacing, long before the thickness limit is reached.

Only cure is prevention, by fettling the calipers every 10K miles or so.

Had what was described a warped disc or discs on my Xantia. Manifested itself as judder under braking fairly shortly after new discs/pads fitted.

New discs fitted under warranty. Issue was said to be related to that car's handbrake operating on the front discs and differential cooling as a result.

Seemed to make sense at the time and as it never recurred I didn't give it further thought.

The problem can be transfer of pad material onto the hot disc if the brakes are held on after a hard stop or some hard driving (or maybe even normal driving if the rears are providing even less balanced effort than they should for some reason), doubly possible with your Xantia with the park brake operating on the front pads.
