Skoda Karoq - Skoda Karoq used, best engine option - Icru96
Hi Friends,

Just wanted to know your thoughts on buying a used Skoda Karoq.
I am looking to buy a petrol Karoq but not sure which option to go for.
I am confused between the 1.0 tsi and the 1.5 tsi.

Not sure if the 1 litre would be enough for the Karoq.
I am also a bit hesitant to go after the 1.5 (which was my favourite engine option) after reading about the kangaroo issue in first gear with the 1.5 tsi (manual) VAG engines. Is this issue resolved?

Please let me know your opinion..

Thank you

Whether or not the 1.0 is enough will depend on how you drive, your performance expectations, how much weight the car will be carrying, etc, etc.

Best thing to do would be to take one for a test drive, but if you are not a particularly fast driver and the car won't be towing anything heavy or regularly have a full compliment of passengers and luggage, I'd expect the 1.0 to be adequate. No ball of fire you understand, but acceptable. Key figure for a more relaxed driving style is torque, how much and at what rpm. The 1.0TSI Karoq makes 200nm, about the same as a n/a (non turbo) 2.0 petrol, but this is on tap from 2000-3500rpm, whereas on the n/a 2.0, peak torque will be about 4000rpm.

Don't think about engine size, look at the figures!

I have the 1.5tsi. I can't comment on the 1.0, having never driven it, but the 1.5 has all the power you'd ever need. I have driven the 1.0 in other cars and it's pretty lively so I think it's a case of extra grunt rather than the 1.0 being feeble.

The 1.5 kangarooing issue was supposedly resolved by a software update. Mine (which is a DSG, not a manual) has had the update and has a noticeably uneven idle for about 20 seconds.when first started from cold. If you've ever driven something earlier than about 2000 it won't be a problem for you. I am now in the habit of starting the engine when I get in. By the time I have my seatbelt on, phone plugged in, mirrors checked etc it's levelled out and doesn't come back.

Thanks for the reply! I hear the issue is more prominent in manual gearbox. But it’s promising to hear that they are rolling out software updates Cheers!

Thank you for replying!

Yes, I won’t be towing anything and will be driving with just me for around 80% of the journey. However I am not an extremely fast driver but I do like a bit of power to make 70+mph overtakes on highways.

I have a 1.0 tsi t-cross and I am happy with its power, but was not sure if I should go with the same on Karoq due to the increased weight.

Cheers!

Figures can vary from source to source. But from what I can gather, the difference in kerbweight between a 1.0TSI T-Cross and Karoq isn't that much, circa 75-100kg. Worth pointing out that the Karoq is only available with the higher power version of the engine, whereas the T-Cross can also be had with the 95bhp. If your T-Cross has the lower powered engine, the Karoq would actually have a better power to weight ratio.

But as said earlier, take one for a test drive to see how you find it.
