Suzuki Swift - Swift gearbox problems? - Rusty Bullethole

My daughter is thinking of buying a 2017-on Swift 1.2. I have heard by word of mouth that the Swift manual gearbox is prone to premature failure - maybe bearings? Any truth to that?

I've had/ got 2 suzukis never had any issues with gearboxes, I'm also friends with the dealer principal of my local dealership, he's never had a car in with box problems.

Yes , these are known for gearbox issues, but really only affects early models from around 2005 -10 .

Sorry Doc, simply not true, the only criticisms I'm aware of with Suzuki boxes are the auto boxes fitted to the latest Vitara ( overcome by using the paddles rather than letting the box get on with it) and occasional trouble with the viscous coupling on the swift 4x4 , that said my swift was a 4x4 and never gave a moment's trouble....

It’s not uncommon, but as far as I’m aware only really affects the pre 2012 model. I supplied a low mileage, full history (59,000) 11 plate 1.3GL to a colleague a few years ago and the gearbox failed on it within a month. Not something I expected or previously experienced, but ten minutes googling the subject and it is indeed a problem with this model. The 2017 model the OP refers to should be ok.

Our bought from new 2011 Swift has 87,000 on the clock now and we loved it. Sold it at 10 years old, Yeah it’s plasticky and rattles a bit but it was such great fun. Like a little go cart and great to drive. Other than service items, it had a new mirror heater element and windows switch in ten years. Nothing else. Both cost less than £50 including fitting.
