nk8 vw golf 1.6 diesil - VW recall, can they really hold my car - Dale Hirst

Hi,

Just tried to book my 3 yr golf for its first MOT, and to have a needed software recall done.

VW : it takes 3 days for the software,

Me: you have a loaner car.

VW: None available til december.

Me: Fine please just do the MOT.

VW: We cannot do that, we are not permitted to release a car without the update.

me: are you impounding my car?

vw: I have no details but we cannot let cars of our forcourt without this update

me: is it safety , will it fail MOT without the update?

VW: no, simply our policy from VW

Me: Can I get MOT done elsewhere, will it fail on software

VW: you can MOT elsewhere as per your choice and it wont fail on safety for the software

OKAY...............

So my question to the forum is it if its not unsafe why are VW confiscating cars till the update is done?

Has anyone else heard of this ?

Cheers

Dale

It takes 3 days for the software?!?, that surely can't be normal can it?

Haven't heard of this, but I'd simply get the MOT done elsewhere and book the car in for service and recall when they can give you a loan car.

What job does the software involved in this recall actually do?

I have booked the MOT elsewhere and will book the update when they have the loaner.

Its just the audacity to effectively confiscate the car once on their premises, what If I had a dependant or was a top surgeon who needed the car?

I have heard past software takes 8h on a trickle server from VW HQ, no local copies are allowed. Thats the problem with effectively owning a PC on wheels.

It's a problem with owning a VW. My experience with their dealers is that they're particularly unpleasant.

Can't understand what your dealership is playing at. Despite them saying they couldn't release the car without the update, that is exactly what they did!

Do you know of any issue with your car, which the software update is meant to resolve?

If the car is working fine and it's not a safety related update, I would consider giving the update a miss.

I'm assuming as your car is 3 years old, it's now out of warranty, so you don't need to take it back to the dealer again.

Why would you do that?

If you are in the (admittedly very unpleasant) position of owning a newish car to which this sort of BS applies, surely you just have to suck it up?

A (probably valid) analogy would be owning an MS Windows computer, Worth delaying the updates as long as possible in case they screw them up, which they do sometimes, but eventually you just have to accept them.

There is, AFAIK, no Linux for cars.

There is, AFAIK, no Linux for cars.

IIRC tesla software is taken from Linux- android, but the new VW software soon to be released in 2025 afaia will be over the air updates to software, working with Microsoft.

so I was told, as by then all VW cars will have info directed to Microsoft cloud from all cars on the road, same as tesla does now, info like problems in systems can then be rectified by over the air fixes without going into the garage

I gather the new system controls everything in the car and problem solving remotely

The infotainment, nav and phone interface system in our Dacia Duster is Linux based - apparently.

The Medianav Evolution 3 or Smart Evolution (MN3) - third version of the multimedia system. It is based on a 2 Ghz processor with 2 GB RAM and Linux operating system. MN3 is compatible with Android Auto and Apple Car Play. The software versions start from release 1.0.XX.Y, and up today, the last software version is version 1.0.15.3.

Manufactured for Dacia/Renault by LG electronics.

The previous two Medianav systems were windows based.

nk8 vw golf 1.6 diesil - VW recall, can they really hold my car - Xileno

I have had an email discussion with the OP and have no reason to doubt any of the information posted.

Just to clarify: the car did not even get to the VW garage, the conversation was had over the phone. So the car did not get 'released', it was not even there in the first place. It was only IF the car was at the garage's property then the recall work had to be done.

The words 'impounded' and 'confiscated' are the OP's words, not the garage's.

Can we please not jump to conclusions about the validity of a poster or a post. I have removed some of the comments. If anyone doubts the validity of either then email the Mod account, we can see things general members can't and if nothing else we can email the poster directly. It is nearly always the case that someone who is posting is a dishonourable way has a spoof email and don't reply and that's clearly not the case here.

Thank you

Mod

I'd like to apologise to the OP and Xileno. I misread the opening post. I thought the car had been taken to the dealer.

Think about the 3 day waffle from dealer for a moment,

How many 1.6 diesels need upgrades. Multiply that by 3 days, and you've a massive problem. And saying cars can't be left off the forecourt without it merely amplifies the problem.

Never heard such r******.
