Dacia Duster - Engine noise after a cold start on a cold morning - Krumenacker

Hi,

I hope someone does have the answer to this, my Duster is making a very strange sound on a cold morning just like the one in the video Link below,it does disappear after a minute or two but it's not normal and I'm worried of not becoming something more serious, been to a dealership and couldn't find the issue, 2 hours of manual labor and investigation cand be very expensive and can't afford to go again and still the issue not being fixed, did anyone had the same issue and managed to fix it?

I presume this is the diesel? 1.5?

Hmm...repeats on about a 5 second cycle...odd

Can you get electrical power to the car? If so it might be worth running a sump heater. I have a coffee pot warmer plate that I thought of using for that, but then I lost the parking, and motivation isn't high in Taiwan anyway, even in the "not summer"

I wonder what the 2 hours of manual labour involved?

I'd check my oil, (enough and reasonably fresh?), consider changing to a skinnier grade if you arent already as skinny as can be (though I hate to say that as it goes very much against my thick oil preference), and one with a lot of detergent in it.

IF going for further pro service, tell them to specifically check oil pressure against specs, IF they have this capability.

Paying them to randomly "have a look" seems likely to waste money.

I dunno what style of tappets this engine has, but someone will. I suppose its JUST possible they need manual adjustment, or more likely, that hydraulic tappets are a bit clogged.

In the latter case, you might, rather topically, benefit from a flushing oil

Agree with Edlithgow, some good suggestions there.

First thing i'd do is remove the auxilliary drive belt, instantly removing water pump (probably) alternator air con compressor and belt idler/tensioner from the equation, start and run for a short while only with belt removed, if the noise is still there its probably engine internal.

I'm not familiar with the engine or vehicle but from the top of my head other external possibilities are crank pulley, DMF failing if its manual.

Assuming its internal whats the service history like, hopefully annual oil changes with decent oil, if its been negected then various wear and/or oil gumming issues are possible.

Firstly i'd drain the oil overnight and poke an endoscope up the drain hole to inspect the oil pick up, that should be a nice clean strainer, if all well there i'd be inclined to buy some Diesel specific engine oil (doesn't need to be one of the big makes, 20 litres packs of good oil are excellent value) and a few decent filters and give it a few short mileage oil changes, see if things improve.

Some Premium Diesel / Redex additive and give the car a run + a bit of an Italian tune up after it is fully warmed up.

I run my car of Premium all the time, a son fills up with premium every 3 /4 tfill ups.

Worked for me, many years back, when we had a similar type issue with a family runabout / learner car for the then kids.
