We are looking at a used vw tiguan for around £6k as we like its mix of reliability ( if properly maintained ) and looks

Anything we should also consider in the 4x4/SUV market for that price ?

cheers

Wouldn't go anywhere near a £6k Tiguan myself and I certainly wouldn't expect it to be particularly reliable.

In the current market, £6k really won't go very far, especially if an SUV. But if it has to be an SUV, then it would be Toyota RAV4 or Honda CRV (2.0 petrol for both) at that money for me because the likelihood of it being reliable is far higher than a VW of that age.

Maybe also consider a Hyundai ix35 or Kia Sportage, Kia Soul if you can manage with something a little smaller.

Honda CR-V - a later gen 2 one in the best condition you can find.

Toyota RAV4 (not the 2.2 diesel)

2nd gen Kia Sportage

Subaru Forester (not the diesel)

Seeing as a Skoda Karoq, Seat Ateca and Audi Q3 are all the same car as a Tiguan, you might look at those too.

You won't get a Karoq or Ateca anywhere near £6k, and while there may be a few £6k Q3's about, they will almost certainly be very high miles.

In the 4x4/SUV market for that price range, consider vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Subaru Forester for their reliability and versatility.

Hmm, three which have already been suggested and another never sold in the UK*?

That and the wording make the post smell a bit fishy!

*The Escape name has never been used in the UK, but versions of the car have (Maverick and Kuga).

You’ve been completely misinformed if you believe a £6k VW Tiguan is going to be reliable. This wasn’t VW’s finest hour, the diesels suffer emissions equipment failures (DPF/EGR) and require a costly timing belt change every 5yrs, the early chain driven TSi petrols are notorious for timing chain problems while the DSG autos are to be avoided at all costs. Don’t get these mixed up with the tough old VW’s of the past, these are nowhere near as robust as the older 1.9 PD diesels. I wouldn’t recommend one.

Suzuki SX4 S-Cross petrol? Plenty with reasonable mileage/age for just shy of £7k, just haggle!

Sorry for the late response to the comments

Thanks everyone so far

Sounds like I was given some wrong advice from the FB tiguan forum who naturally all sand its praises but very few said they had any issues and had bought them even cheaper

To fill in a bit more history. Its for my daughter who currently shares with my wife a 2012 BMW X1 Xdrive auto which we bought for £8500 a year ago. It only has 73k miles FBMWSH etc and is a great car..but the steering is very heavy. I took it to a BMW specialist and they said its normal, even the BMW forum said so. This would be fine but my wife has arthritis in her wrists so I want to sell it and get a slightly cheaper car but similar sort of age and modern inside

Hope that makes sense

I will see what i can find in the models you suggested

If you really like the car otherwise, it is a shame to be forced out of it.

Amongst the many adaptations that can be made to a car for mobility reasons, having the power steering "lightened" is one. So before going down the road of changing, it would probably be worth enquiring about the cost of having this done, and finding out if there is an outfit not too far from you who can do the work.

Here is a link to the relevant page of Driffield Mobility (Yorkshire). No prices listed, presumably because there are too many variations between cars, but you'd be able to get a quote.

BBD this is a great idea for the OP. I nearly did it years ago but was a bit weary of any effect on reliability. Do you know anyone that has done it?

Although back then it would have been for a different reason, the thought of super light 70s Cadillac style steering still appeals :-)

Agreed, although I suspect it will take some of the driving pleasure away. I guess BMW made it like that to feel more 'sporty'. Personally, I'm not bothered by that, but some may be.

The other thought I had, which is pretty wide of the mark on most counts, is a Fiat Tipo. Simply because they have the same 'city' mode as the smaller Fiats, which switches the power steering to a much lighter setting.

Reminds me of a visit to a local Pug dealer about 1990. Someone had test-driven a new 205 cabrio which had PAS fitted, and complained that the steering was impossibly light .... I guess for a petrol-engined car weighing under a ton it may have been.

Changing the tires may help also.

Same comments apply to the Yeti as to any other VAG car of that age.
