Had a clear out of my garage over the bank holiday weekend and found at least 4 sets of jump leads . Does anyone use these anymore? I’ve got 2 of those power booster packs which seem to do the job adequately.

I still keep a set of professional standard leads in my Prado, being twin battery it'll start virtually anything (not seized through lack of antifreeze like one clot colleague) and i don't have to worry from one year to another about keeping a jump pack charged, plus they are cost free being already owned and will last indefinately.

I haven't bought one of the new breed of jump pack, still have my huge JumpStart4000 in the garage which is still going strong after many years, it's definately not going to fit in any glove box :-)

Had a similar shed clear out recently.

From what I found, if I’ve ever needed a couple of cable ties or wood screws for a job I’ve obviously bought a pack of 500.

I don't think there are many places left which will sell loose screws or nails, etc. There was a good hardware place in Widnes till quite recently, but my shed also contains most things I need, so I haven't visited any DiY places for a while :-)

Maybe a good traditional country 'ironmongers' might, like those in Cockermouth or Chagford in Devon(?).

We have a hardware store in Milton Keynes that where you can buy one screw, one nail etc.

My son trained to be a lawnmower mechanic there and was taught to de coke the small engines on the Suffolk Colts. Something that was so costly in man hours these days and possibly marginal benefit.

You must be talking about O’dells in Stony Stratford. Can’t imagine there are many others left like that?

I bought my first shotgun from Odells in Stony.

I discovered the one in Cockermouth when on holiday. It even sells used hand tools and I bought an old manual drill for sentimental reasons. The free museum section is interesting too……..well to this old git it was.

Go into any B&Q and you can get a small polythene bag to fill with a mix of screws.
You pay a set price regardless of whether you’ve got 2 or 200 in the bag.

At various times since becoming a window cleaner I have had starting problems with the van so I have a set of decent quality jump leads. Most recently I needed to use them on a semi regular basis about a year ago with the Caddy. But I would park nose to nose with the Ignis and jump it off that when necessary.

I do remember being stuck on a customers driveway once unable to start, the customer was not in so I asked next door if it would be possible to jump start the van off her car. She handed me (a stranger to her) the keys and told me to help myself!.

She wasn't confusing you with Robin Askwith was she, but you misread the signs?

If only!

Wouldn’t let anyone near my car with jump leads. The potential for damage to the electronics is far too great!

None of our cars, or anyone else's I have been jumped from, have ever suffered ill effects. So while there may be a risk, is it really "far too great"?

The last time I used a pair they ended up getting a bit hot but they might have been a cheap set. I have a decent set in the car (well I hope so, they're Halfords) but they've never been used.

Oh no! I'm getting jump lead anxiety...I don't actually own any!

My daughter got me a set when my car that was to take her to wedding preparations wouldn't start. Had to take the Kia Pride instead and she's never forgiven me. Realised the 'posh' car hadn't been used for around six weeks, as we tended to use the Kia as it was convenient.. Never used the jump leads.
