Any recommendations where to buy a car from? Ive noticed Cazoo are cheaper than some as are Motorpoint.

Also, thoughts on a medium sized car, i was thinking Hyundai i30? Or go for an Astra which would be my 4th.

Under 11k would be good, any advice appreciated. Thanks

From my experience when looking, Cazoo always seem to have the nicest stock. I've never bought a car from them, but also not heard bad things.

I tend to buy cars either from manufacturer approved stock or the Seat dealer round the corner (which has a range of used cars) because I can walk there, they price things realistically and their service staff are great.

A mate of mine bought a 2006 Renault Scenic from a car supermarket in 2010 and has been driving it happily since, so I wouldn't rule those out. Just steer clear of the 'Arthur Daley' places.

My last was from Motorpoint. Very large stock, well presented.

That was from a one-off. You pays yer money and takes yer choice!

The car you buy from anywhere could be a lemon.

If I wanted a "really good second hand car" I would buy it from a small dealer with 4 main dealer franchises - their 2nd hand cars are well prepared and any issues are dealt with before it goes in the showroom. I have bought 2 x cars from them ages ago and used them for servicing on cars when they were still under warranty.

That said their 2nd hand prices are always high and the T/I values are not the best.

A son bought his daughter a 2nd hand Aygo 18 months ago - the Toyota dealer, 300 yards from home, was around £1200 more than the £8,000 he paid another Toyota dealer for the same model/age and mileage. The Aygo he bought has been 100% - servicing and replacing 2 x ditch finders has been total outlay.

If buying used outside of manufacturer standard warranty, then the manufacturer backed used warranty is often the best choice and they only come from manufacturer car dealerships.

For 11k I would try and go down that route and avoid any independent dealerships.

Have only heard good things about buying from Cazoo and motorpoint, I have purchased from motorpoint in the past but this was pre covid when they only stocked nearly new cars with manufacturer warranty remaining.

As always do your research on the male and model your buying and haggle on the price, even the likes of motorpoint have £200 they can reduce with a stubborn customer or knock off the admin fee.

I think we are talking about chains, but even with a chain much can depend on the local manager, as well as other factors even as basic as the surroundings of the place.

i was thinking Hyundai i30?

I have an i30 which I have had for 14 years from new and my son has just replaced an i30 which he had for ten years and put 250,000km on. They are a good reliable car but the electric window winders fail. We have replaced ours twice and my son's has been the same. To replace them Hyundai sell a replacement door card with all the mechanism. It is about 200 pounds. The alternative is to get replacement plastic tensioner off ebay which is cheap but a pain to fit and can fail again fairly soon. All cars have their weak points and that is the Hyundai's. By all means get an i30 and you should be happy with it but check all the windows first. If the window won't wind up and down it may have been wedged shut with a bit of wood inside the door card. Some one who tries that kind of trick may be trying other tricks too. Walk away.

Its likely the electric window mechanism has changed at least twice in 10 years

If electric window mechanisms are the only issue in 14 years, thats simply brilliant

You have got a good car

My darling swmbo bought a three year old Leaf from Cinch a few months back despite my reservations about buying a car unseen. It was delivered to the door a few days later and was exactly as described. The cost was almost £3,000 less than the near identical car at our nearby Nissan dealer. So far it’s been faultless.

Both most recent s/h purchases, Skoda Roomster then a Fabia, have been fine.

Much longer ago 2* Citroen BX. Again both main dealer stuff, latter an ex company car (NHBC). Again no issues. Similar experience to buying new in terms of warranty etc.

It used to be, up to about 15 years ago, that you could buy an ex fleet, 2 year old car from an auction for about 50% of the new price. Large cars were an especially good deal. They usually had a full service record and the balance of new car warranty. I did that several times and got very good cars that way. Those days are gone now, mores the pity.

Bought a Mazda2 from Cazoo a couple of years ago - pretty good experience, would use them again. Although I was looking at their website recently, along with Cinch, and although Cazoo seemed to have some cheaper cars, they tended to have a lot more imperfections - chips, scratches, dents etc. But they do tell you about them - you know what you're getting.

I would also have a look at Cinch if you're happy buying online - bought one from them before the Mazda that I had to return, not their fault, and the return was a painless process. However I bought another one from them a couple of weeks ago that again I had to return, but that was their fault - they'd said it had no imperfections, but it turned up with loads. Possibly just a one-off though.

Picking up an old (2016) used approved MINI from the local dealership on Friday. Yes, no doubt I'm paying for the privilege, but I have felt well treated.

5 year old, 50K+ on the clock - at first look of the piccies it looks "pretty fair" condition.

Cinch is owned by British Car Auctions (BCA) who also own WeBuyAnyCar

Cinch get lots of their cars from WBAC - the poorer ones go under the hammer.

I parked, about 3 weeks ago, within 50 yards of the WBAC cabin/office - the cars sitting outside were, to be honest, rough / really rough.

However, the magic of today's power washers, shampoos, sprays etc etc will have them gleaming in a forecourt near you!

There is a forecourt a few miles away from me that has 100+ gleaming cars for sale - not 1 litre runabouts but Premium Brands - only when looked at carefully most have "lunar miles" on the clock - even some cars under 5 year old with 150K on the clock.

They have been selling there for 15/20 years under the same name .
