If the MOT emissions test is clean enough for most of Britain why is it it not good enough for London with their ULEZ? Are Londoners more important than the rest of us?

MOT not good enough? - Terry W

London is a large congested city with lots of vehicles and a high density population. There is no escape from the pollution - even if the wind blows the particulates and gases simply end up with neighbouring boroughs.

Little Snoring (or wherever) in rural Dorset, Northumberland or the Highlands is quite different. The main victims of a 40 year old diesel tractor emitting large amounts of soot are mainly cows , sheep, hedgehogs and vermin.

I know cows, sheep etc are all Gods creatures and were they able to protest they might. Life is tough!!

Because the MOT is testing whether a single vehicle is putting out a reasonable amount of toxic emissions. Multiply all of those reasonable emissions by 3.7 million car trips per day in London and you get an awful lot of pollution in one place.

And it's not just London, it's also (to one extent or another) Birmingham, Bristol, Oxford, Glasgow, Bath, Bradford and Portsmouth and probably soon Manchester, Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Sheffield.

Not much in Edinburgh.

When I was back over last Xmas/NY the website I use for monitoring Taiwan AQI was uniformly in the green, while Taiwan was mostly in the red.

Only see green in Taiwan over Chinese New Year, or during and just after a typhoon

People have privately monitored the air quality in London streets; it is not that bad. The air quality on the Underground is much much worse so what is Mayor Khan going to do about that?

What would you like him to do? What can be done?

MOT not good enough? - barney100

He will do nothing about the underground air, his interest in clean air is directly proportional to the amount of cash he can raise from taxing people who he thinks cause it. Perhaps each underground train will have to pay £12.50 per journey.

Have a basic understanding that Nox, which is not produced by electric trains, is heavier than air so will settle.... underground?

As I said in another thread asthmatics affected on the Underground can choose to travel by other means.

Breathing on the streets around home is not an optional activity.

Electric trains picking up power from third rails frequently have sparks/arcs at the pickup shoes.

Such discharges (like lightning ) do produce oxides of nitrogen (and ozone, also toxic), so electric trains do cause air pollution.

Any ozone from sparking on the third rail ? :-) That's not good for you either, but it's not a bad air purifier ....

Ozone levels in excess of 70 parts per billion for 8 hours is harmful to the respiratory system and is a major factor in air pollution, it also forms when nitrogen oxides react with organic materials.

It may kill bacteria but doesn't exactly 'purify' air.

Does anyone honestly believe that a small amount of arcing from.electric rails is producing a significant amount of pollution in a city with millions of vehicle movements every day?

MOT not good enough? - Bromptonaut

AIUI the pollutant on the Tube is particulates rather than NOx.

Wheels on rail and brakes are main issue.

Absolutely. It's filthy down there.

An MOT test is a quick check of the general condition and safety of a vehicle. The MOT emissions test has nothing in common with the comprehensive emissions testing carried out by vehicle manufacturers to meet the requirements for vehicle type approval.

Think about it. At the MOT the vehicle is not driving a rolling road to enable the engine to produce a power output, and the ambient conditions (temperature, pressure etc.) are not controlled. It is a simple "rough and ready" check on just a couple of the many constituents of the products of combustion in the exhaust. With no rolling road the engine is only producing enough power to keep itself running (ie. just enough to overcome internal friction and to suck in the air/fuel mixture and push the exhaust out). Its actual power output is zero hence the amount of fuel burnt is tiny.

An MOT emissions pass does not prove a vehicle meets its type approval emissions standards but indicates that it is not a hopeless "shed".
