That Toyota Estima's been up to no good with the cheese grater again.

Looks nice inside though.

The way the interior is set up, it is clearly for rich customers being driven to wherever. So how the outside looks is of little relevance.

The Toyota Alphard/Vellfire is what lurks under there. This is actually a fairly modest step forward in luxury from the Executive Lounge version of both.

Having googled the new Alphard, it doesn't really lurk does it? It appears that Lexus just took the badge off the front.

Yeah, the Lexus has some extra creasing aft of the headlights and along the flanks, plus different side window line, but not really much else!

Was the styling inspired by test mules and disguised prototypes?

I think the styling is clearly inspired by the rest of the Lexus range, but we are really just talking about the grill. The basic shape of the car has been around since the Alphard was introduced in 2002. As with most large MPV types, it is very much a case of form following function.

But when I look at the grill treatment of current Alphard and Vellfire, what I think of are Manga comics!

It might be interesting to know whether the design looks attractive to a Japanese buyer ... it would certainly put me off!

Just seems like the strangest thing to bring here, given the current regard for SUV's over people carriers, especially with the polarising front end. I would like to be driven around in it though.

Not a huge expense to bring it to the UK given Japan is already RHD. I doubt they will sell much because of the price and it not being an SUV. Though on that subject, most people cite the commanding driving position as a reason for choosing an SUV and the Lexus is actually taller than most.

As for its looks, well they are entirely subjective. And while they are not really my cup of tea, I find them no less objectionable than most of the current BMW line up.

Also, know it will be reliable, not something that can be said with any confidence about the premium German brands and certainly not Range Rover!.

Put it like this, if I ran a business doing chauffeuring work, I would be very interested in the LM!

I imagine that it is being brought in for a very small (but presumably highly profitable) niche - high end shuttle work or corporate mobile office. etc. For those roles the suitability of the interior is far more important than the grille.

Think as a competitor to a Mercedes V-class rather than a Ford Tourneo (or indeed Proace Verso which may be where they are seeing a demand from that they could not meet?).

Full marks for beating Mercedes BMW Audi and Ssang Yong in the what were they thinking stakes, the rest of the car is ok but the front is hideous.

Barking mad list price is even uglier and will see it absolutely fail in the UK and quickly withdrawn, despite there being demand for such cars here as shown by the number of similar (if less luxurious) Japanese imports.

The leasing rates on these will be hilarious as expected depreciation will be horrendous.
