Volvo XC90 - I could really do with some advice on my Volvo d5 - Bonobo

I could really do with some advice. I purchased a 2008 xc90 d5 auto 110000 on the clock about 5 months ago. All been fine. Last month on a journey it started randomly stalling, before dying on me. Would then crank but not fire no matter what. Rac towed to my usual garage. When they got around to looking at it 2 days later, it started and drove without issue. We changed fuel filter and did leak off test at my request. All OK.

Fast forward a month....

Last weekend I drove half hour and as I was turning into my drive, the engine shut off and then wouldn't restart for several hours. Again the engine cranked but didn't fire. I also noticed the tachometer didn't move at all whilst cranking.

I tried again after leaving over night and now the sounds very rough when it starts. I tried a short several hundred meter journey and it either stalls, or jerks. I can see and hear the tachometer / rpm counter keep clicking as it drops erratically before either returning to where it should be or the engine cutting off. I have no idea what it could be or how I can resolve it as it is not driveable.

I have a cheapish bluetooth obd2 reader and that is no showing any codes. No engine lights.

I'm desperate for your ideas. I am meant to be using it on holiday in a few weeks. It is just so random.

Of note, I also noted different firing times when starting from cold. Sometimes straight away, others a few seconds then it is rough until I set off.

Additionally, no idea if related but the breakdown has also followed after a few days of me fuelling up.

Thanks a lot.

Injectors would be the obvious place to start.

Is your cheapo code reader capable of showing fuel pressure under cranking?

Fuel filter? Has it a water drain off?

Sounds electrical to me - reminds me of similar symptoms experienced with our Passat GL5 way back when. Like most intermittent faults it took ages to diagnose; a faulty Hall sender. Do modern distributor-less cars have a Hall sender/sensor?

Think you’ll find this is a Diesel engine.

After first breakdown, fuel filter was changed. Fault returned a month later after driving OK inbetween.

When running "ok", it sounds / feels rough upon starting from cold. And as stated, sometimes starts straight away, other times, takes a second or two. Random and not sure if related.

Is a faulty sensor possible? If no engine codes even with a professional reader, what should I do to resolve?

If you’re not able to check the fuel rail pressure under cranking, you’re not going to get much further with any diagnostic.
