Vw golf gt tdi 2.0 140bhp 2008 - fuel temp sensor issue - Lanny

Hi all. In the last couple of days the cars started juddering when accelerating. We've noticed it happens when you release the accelerator slightly and put back on.

It doesn't happen all the time though, it's intermittent.

If I had to describe it, It almost feels as though it's going to stall (but it doesn't) I've had to either gear down or apply more revs to push through it and it keeps going.

The glow plug light came on really briefly the other day whilst driving but was only on for a matter of seconds and went back off and hasn't come back on since.

So I've had it in garage today on the diagnostics and it threw a fault code out for the fuel temperature sensor. I got the new sensor straight away, took it back to garage, they replaced it, took it for a run but was still doing it. Back on diagnostics and code had gone. Got told to give it a good run but it's still doing it. It even cut out on me twice which it's never done before replacing the sensor. But it's not done it again since (cut out)

Only other codes that came up both times were glow plugs, something to do with door locking module and a bulb that's out (reg plate lamp)

When it first started we thought it was something to do with the throttle position sensor so was surprised when the fuel temp sensor code came up.

Also, it seems to run like a dream from a cold start, it's as the day goes on it seems to get worse.

Any ideas please?

Just to add - it doesn't judder violently.

Timing belt and water pump were changed 30k ago, clutch and gears are good and no other issues

Garage have no idea what else it could be

None of those faults logged would cause your problem. I’d be inclined to think it’s a transmission issue . Possibly clutch or dmf ?

Check the EGR valve and manifold..

Check the EGR valve and manifold..would the EGR valve cause these issues?

It's not running sluggish though, if anything it wants to go lol. We've no leaks, no lights on dash, sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. It really odd.

It could. The problem is, lots of stuff could; transmission, EGR, fuel filter, turbo problems, ECU fault, MAF sensor etc.

EGR is pretty quick and easy to check. Likewise the MAF sensor.

If there are no codes and lots of possible culprits, I think it makes sense to start with the easy ones. Check the EGR, unplug the MAF sensor, change the fuel filter etc.

Thank you, I'll be back at garage tomorrow. Our mechanic is really good but he's even scratching his head. If there's an issue he's usually the first to say what he thinks it could be and he's spot on every time but he's even puzzled

Just been reading up about MAF sensor issues and it explains what's happening to a T!! Juddering upon acceleration.

How do we check the MAF sensor?

I believe you can just unplug it and see if the problem stops. Temporarily, of course. It serves a purpose.

Clutch and gears seem to be OK though. Gear changes are smooth and no crunching or difficulty getting into gears. However, my son did mention today whilst in the car with me that it seemed like it happened when I changed gear

Would the dmf and clutch not show up on diagnostics?

Our old golf (07 plate gt tdi) DID have clutch issues which were very obvious, I think that's why I ruled it out on this one.

Any other transmission issues that could cause it other than clutch and dmf?

Clutch and dmf are 100% mechanical, so there’s no diagnostic facility. Maf sensors are generally very reliable, they either work or don’t work.
