Yup-key this info into Autotrader for starters and I think you’ll be interested . I’d choose a model which has averaged 7k a year
Any - Help ! Newer car time for the wife - SLO76
I’d shortlist the following

Ford Fiesta 1.25/1.4 petrol
Ford Focus 1.6 petrol
Ford C-Max 1.6 petrol
Toyota Yaris 1.33 petrol
Toyota Auris 1.33/1.6 petrol
Mazda 2 1.3/1.5 petrol
Mazda 3 1.6/2.0 petrol
Honda Civic 1.4 petrol

Or possibly a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 petrol if you find a particularly well cared for example.

I’ll look for actual cars using the postcode you’ve provided when I get a chance.

Haven't had either a thorough look at pics or looked up MOT history!

Any - Help ! Newer car time for the wife - badbusdriver

Had another look through these (not MOT history though) and have a couple of observations.

The black Yaris I suspect is being sold by a trader claiming to be a private seller (to avoid their legal obligations) because of the way it has been pictured. Doesn't necessarily mean you should avoid it, partly because with your budget and requirements there isn't a huge amount of choice, but also because they are very reliable.

The other Yaris is an import. I did suspect this by the upholstery colour and by the absence of steering wheel controls, but it does say so quite clearly in the ad. As with the other Yaris, not necessarily a reason to avoid it but there are a couple of things to be aware of. Insurance might be a little dearer, and some parts (trim rather than mechanical, AFAIK this would be identical under the skin as the UK version) might be tricky to get. I suspect this would have a centre rear lap belt rather than 3 point, but only relevant if you are likely to have three on the rear seats. And make sure it has been undersealed because a JDM car wouldn't have from the factory (Japan doesn't use salt on their roads in winter).

The black Corsa is priced on the high side, but it does have much luxuries as a heated steering wheel (as well as front seats), which may appeal!.

The two first gen Nissan Note's are perhaps unsung heroes here, very reliable, very spacious for their size and very reliable. Both are higher spec cars with diamond cut alloys which can look tatty when the lacquer lifts, but otherwise all good.

The Kia Venga is a very similar type of car being very compact for the size, tall too, taller than many SUV's. The petrol auto is known to be on the thirsty side, especially the pre-facelift cars like the one I've linked which has a 4 speed auto (post facelift, 2014 on, got a six speed). But if the car isn't going to do a lot of miles it shouldn't be a problem, and they are also very reliable.

The Astra's?. With the n/a 1.6 and a t/c auto there should be no real concerns over reliability. Maybe not as nice to drive as a Focus, but they have a (IMO) higher quality interior and most models are pretty well specced. Decent all round cars often unfairly overlooked in favour of cars like the Focus and Golf.

Ford Focus with sensible miles and service history. Dealer is well reviewed and the car looks good in the pics and it’s the right model with the robust Yamaha designed 1.6 petrol and a manual box. Don’t touch the 1.0 Ecoboost or the Powershift auto. I obviously haven’t seen this car in the metal and I haven’t done a Mot history check so don’t buy without doing so, ditto anything else I suggest. The Focus is fun to drive, reliable and cheap to run.

One owner full history Mazda 3 1.6 in white. These drive like a Focus but have the bonus of a very tough chain driven Mazda engine. This one has heated front seats too, which is a bonus in winter. Excellent cheap family cars.

Ah, that does limit option hugely. Many autos in your price range are fragile and often jerky automated manuals like Ford and VW’s unreliable (and hugely costly to fix) Powershift and DSG boxes. Will take another look.

She tried out a Mitsubishi Mirage and found it hard to drive with its light clutch meaning her leg shot straight up (her words), she also had difficulty in reaching the clutch without her lifting her foot off the floor.

Dealers are asking stupid money for small autos in your area at the moment, I’ve seen a 59 plate Fiesta auto at £7k!!!

You may need to find a bit more money to get something with a decent amount of life left I’m afraid.

Mazda 2. These are very hardy things, no turbo, no DPF, no timing belt and no complex automated manual box to worry about. Good cars but watch for rust underneath, check the Mot history and look under it.

I’m stunned by the prices being asked for small autos down there, for £6,500 you’re often looking at a 14yr old car, something that would’ve been £2,500 before Covid, it’s nuts.

Here’s a Mk I Nissan Note auto. These are practical and mechanically very tough, body resists rot better than most also. Don’t get them mixed up with the later Mk II with it’s made from cheese CVT box.

Thanks for the suggestions. Prices on South East have gone bonkers, and sadly show no sign of getting back to sensible levels. Wife paid £2000 for her current car 9.5 years ago, equivalent model now is at least 3 times in price.

We had a look at these today

www.kentcarcentre.co.uk/used/cars/honda/civic/i-vt...4

Seemed to of had a hard life with interior trim missing and budget tyres.

Wife not so a Honda Civic is for her felt to much for her.

Nice car with 3 new Falkens the other tyre being a dunlop.

Good condition, let down is MOT history and the dealer.

Think we might have to travel further for the right car at tge right price, but how far?

I’d go view that Mazda 3 I linked before or the two Focus Zetec’s. They’re both great options at this size and money. A Mazda 2 is a great little car too, with possibly the best manual gear change, a thing all modern Mazda’s share.

Can I second the Nissan Note 1.6 Auto. Very reliable engine and torque converter autobox (with overdrive). For a small car it's very roomy and in real life it's a refined and surprisingly economical car.

Nissan Note to the list of cars, when did the MK2 come out so we can try avoid them?

“ Nissan Note to the list of cars, when did the MK2 come out so we can try avoid them?”

The Mk II came out in 2012. It’s a more modern looking car but the quality isn’t as good as the Mk I but the CVT automatic is the one to really avoid, the normally aspirated 1.2 petrol with a manual box is typically ok if looked after but I’d avoid the rare supercharged version.

Can I suggest a left field choice? Do you have somewhere you could charge an electric vehicle? EVs are automatic. There are a lot of Nissan Leaf's and Renault Zoe's in budget. A lot of the Renault Zoe's have leased batteries (you pay a monthly rental for the battery and if the battery needs replaced, the battery lease company pays for this. You still have to buy the car, though).

Explained here (I have no connection to this company, nor have I had any dealings with them): www.gogreenautos.co.uk/buyers-guide/battery-lease-...d

Nissan Leaf's (or is it Leaves :-) )

www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202306278999365

Renault Zoe's (These examples all have leased batteries)

www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202304176356272

www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202304266694220

This one is over budget, but I included it as it's newer and has a larger battery pack.

www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202307059309436

I was thinking that 3 of the Zoe's here are well under budget, so the difference could go towards the battery lease. It depends of course if you can charge the car, and your journey types fit within the mileage range of the car (range will be significantly lower in cold weather).

What are your thoughts?

Certainly worth considering

It may be easier and cheaper to find a newer model for the car!! Smile please. If you had an Astra for 9 years why not seek out another as you know the cars and they are as good to run as anything Have a look at Cat D or cat Ns as they can offer very good value.

She would prefer something else to another Vauxhall.

Not too sure about Cat D or N's

I wouldn’t go with a write-off unless I knew exactly what had happened to it. An older low value car can be written-off for a very minor bump, even just painting a door or a bumper can cause a cheap older car to be binned by an insurance firm. But something that’s worth £7/£8k plus will have had a fairly major impact, not something I’d want. Plus no one will want it if you want to sell it on.

There really isn't much choice for small autos is there? A few Yarises on Autotrader but either imports or a bit ropey.

Does it absolutely have to be five door? I only ask because this iq looks very nice:

www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202305107234019?a...3

Other than that, I would tend to agree that your choices are probably Zoe, Leaf or a Focus 1.6 (which are cheap because they're thirsty).

Not too sure about Cat D or N's

Cat Ds and Ns are the lowest form of car write offs and they do not have any structural damage. They are usually 25% cheaper to buy and often repaired by the same body shops as the insurers use. Go on auto trader and list petrol auto and cat only. You can put in D or N if you wish to rule out the cat S cars Well worth an hour of your time to look what's there If you are on a budget stick to more popular makes like Vauxhall Ford of VW group easier to get spares.

We haven't been told why the last Astra 'expired' but if it did so after only 9 years I would think twice about getting another ?

I think it was already ten years old when purchased, so not too bad.

9.5 years when purchased and we've had car another 9.5 years covering 15,000 miles in that time.

Temporary solution found. We are purchasing relatives car, 20 year old Honda CRV auto with full Honda service history & fresh MOT.

Thank you for all advice provided over the last couple of days, we will see what the used car market does over the next 12 to 18 months, hopefully used car prices will get back to a more reasonable level over the aforementioned period.
