Whilst fixing my previous problem rooted in a failing diesel injector loom ... I let the clutch out suddenly with medium revs and the car stationary! Causing a very hard stall! There were no sounds of anything breaking, but it was quite nasty.
I was for many weeks, driving the car with a degraded injector wiring loom, which at times caused some knocking. That is now fixed. But a new noise I think began then, and has been increasing.
SYMPTOMS: harshish "clicking" when driving at constant speed above about 45mph. This goes away, under both acceleration, and low power, wen allowing the car to slow down.
With the car on a lift, rotating the left front wheel backwards and forwards causes multiple clicks and knocks from inside the area of the diff (or the bearing on the right) in the gearbox housing. Its possible to feel these with my hand on the housing.
Also when driving and cornering turning right, there is a little noise like wheel bearings - but these were replaced <1 year ago, and the bearings feel smooth with the car lifter. Also there is a noise like a poor break disk, however they are new pads and disks from about a month ago, and seem perfect.
All these noises have developed quickly over this week, after fixing the injector wiring loom last Saturday! I'll be back on the train and bicycle tomorrow as I want to save this if I can!!!
I think the stall fatally damaged the transmission, and something has been going wrong ever since, and it is now getting really bad.
Googling it, I see that the Golf has had gearbox problems, and on Ebay, even scrap gearboxes fetch £250 or more ! and seem to be being delivered from Spain!!!!
Any advice, please again!!! I've switched engines before, however its getting to be antisocial to do major car repairs on the street! If I get a backstreet workshop to change the gearbox how big a job is it; what should it cost?
I'm not keen to give up on the car, ... the devil I know....
