My partner had a full service 2 weeks ago @ In and Out with spark plug check.
Driving back from Cornwall, engine fault light came on, AA came out and fault was spark plugs not firing properly. AA man checked them and said “you could fit a lorry between them gaps” the gaps on all 3 platinum long life plugs appx min 5mm on all 3 plugs. The AA man cleaned them bent them in to make gap smaller, got us back home to Bristol. Went to In & Out showed him photo of plugs he said they don’t look too bad, they replaced them and charged us £80 but he didn’t show us the new ones to compare the gap which I asked for. Does anyone think we have grounds to complain to head office as it caused us no end of hassle. Had to stop 2 hrs on hard shoulder of motorway and feel like fobbed off my mechanic as obviously they had not checked on the service.

Really depends on how many miles it’s covered and what is included in a full service . Most cars are now fitted with long life spark plugs , so don’t get inspected at regular intervals.

It is difficult to understand what a full service means to garages these days. You have to have it spelt out to you exactly what they are going to do and then see if the price you pay is fair. In this instance it does not look like the plugs were changed at the service. Having said that modern spark plugs seldom go out of gap or go faulty. Sounds to me as you probably had one duff plug that was playing up. Unless you were told about changing the plugs at the full service I do not see how you can complain. Sometimes faults happen. You now have new plugs at a reasonable cost and should be fine for another 40k miles or more

If your invoice or quote specifically mentioned checking the plugs then yes you have grounds to complain although that said most reputable places would have whipped them out for a look-see out of habit.

If they were platinum plugs, should they need gapping?

I agree it’s not a major job to check plugs, but time is money. With covers and coil packs to take out carefully it’s a few minutes work. If it’s on the invoice or job list it should be done but if it’s not I wouldn’t expect my garage to take them out on the off chance.

This is an odd story. Why would you remove the spark plugs unless it was time to change them? Spark plugs should last around 50,000 miles in a mundane engine. I only bought two sets for our old Focus which lasted 160,000miles. In theory they should last longer in a modern low revving torquey turbo engines as they don't have to spark as often. Our Peugeot 2008 1.2 puretech EAT6 trundles along most of the time between 1,500 and 2000rpm. Top (6th) gear is around 30mph per 1000 revs. This contrasts starkly with the 21mph per 1000 revs of top (5th) gear of my TR7, which back then was considered long legged. Anyway, I have no intention of changing them until at least 50,000 miles unless some new info appears about their unduly reduced longevity in this engine.

This is what Peugeot class as a full service:

Change of oil and oil filter

Top-ups of all fluids (except Adblue or Eolys)

Brake, steering and other safety checks

Visual checks of tyres, lights, indicators, mirrors and wipers

Environmental checks – pollen filter and exhaust

Reading fault memory codes

Replacement of Air filter element*

Replacement of spark plugs *

Replacement of gearbox oil*

Extensive Vehicle Health Check

Note the * = only if it's reached the time or mileage to change

Replacement of gearbox oil*

Extensive Vehicle Health Check

Presumably, on top of all the other stuff, the Health Check amounts to a MoT test. But I thought Peugeot cars have had lifetime gearbox oil for many years - or is that only for certain heavy-duty vehicles ?

The asterisk indicates at a certain mileage probably light years away or as you put it many years!

Peugeot have used wasted spark ignition systems for many years, plug fires on the compression & also the exhaust stroke.

When you do come to change them the turbocharged versions of the Purecrap need a special thin wall spark plug socket - Laser tools do a good one.

The other thing that can happen is the wrong spark plugs get fitted even by main dealers - I know as they ended up refunding me for replacement spark plugs due to there mistake at a previous service.

The plugs used in the NON turbo version of the engine are not compatible with the turbocharged versions, they will will fit & the engine will run fine normally, but under hard acceleration the engine will misfire.

Thank you all for the feedback and info, the outcome was - After a conversation with head office they are paying for the replacement of the spark plugs which I’m happy with. Just for further info the paperwork on the service did say that the spark plugs had been checked. From what the AA man had said you could see that all 3 spark plugs had not even been removed and checked, when they should have. I remember the mechanic saying he would show me the difference between the new spark plugs and the old ones, he did not do this. When the plugs had arrived, the first we knew was he said, here you go all done now as though he knew they were in the wrong. The outcome is we have new spark plugs and I will not be returning to that garage again, I will find a reliable local independent garage. Thanks for the comments

Thank you for the update. Paying for work that garages don't do is all too common in the trade. Good for you to take them up on it and get a result which again does not happen that often.
