Can EV’s that are towing trailers/caravans charge at service areas without unhitching? Thinking of available space at charging area….

If they charge at one with enough space, yes. If not, no.

From my albeit limited (only using the same few for mostly regular holiday trips to the same area) experience using motorway services, non-Tesla EV charging points seem to be regular length parking spaces.

Users may have better luck if they own a Tesla as their charging area isn't just a 'converted' parking space in the main car parking area, but a separate are which, from what I've seen, has more space behind them not used as the thoroughfare between rows of space, though not specifically to be able to take long vehicles towing.

Hopefully such specialist facilities will appear in the areas designated for cars with caravans and RVs, though they may have to wait their turn given non-towing vehicles will likely get priority for new charging points first, as the demand for them has likely gone up a lot quicker.

That is something that needs a dose of looking at.
Lots of variables, including where the charge port is on the car - some are on the rear quarters of the car, some where the radiator would be in the nose. Some in the front wing.
I’d suspect that, for most occasions, it’d be an unhitch to charge.

And leave it in caravan corner of the services whilst you go off to charge the EV. Might want to take adequate security with you!

Isn't that what the rest of the family and a dog is for? ;-)

Something that needs more thought but this is a new one from Osprey

One advantage of towing is that you can put a spare battery in the caravan.

I know a very capable EV for towing. It runs on tracks and gets electricity from overhead wires - so no range anxiety. :o)

I suppose that if it were quiet nobody would mind if you straddled a few charger stations or caused a bit of obstruction. From my observation of todays caravan owner it his no hassle to disconnect and a lot even have remote control to manoeuvre the van. Again mentioning the TV segment on EV charging this AM they interviewed a lady who had parked on the pavement completely blocking it so she could charge her EV via a 3 pin plug. She did put a notice in the car window apologising!

79p per kWh seems excessive….

‘ 79p per kWh seems excessive….’

Sadly, it’s about the going rate for a public rapid charger.

Osprey actually went to £1 per kWH, expecting everyone else to go with them. No one else did, so they came back down again.

Suspect that charging without unhitching not a realistic option, Although In my experience filling at a regular fuel station with a large trailer attached is often not possible.. I think preparation is the key- know the options en route, and make sure you’ve got hitch and wheel locks to leave a trailer unattended while you charge
