Peugeot 3008 1.2 puretech - Is 42,000 miles too many miles - Davlin69

Hi everyone, would be so grateful if someone could help me out with this please. I'm in the process of buying a Peugeot 3008 1.2 puretech petrol on a "17" plate with fsh. After checking previous mot's there were 2 fails. I'm not sure if I'm allowed but here's the link to the government mot report.... www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/results?registration=...f

Peugeot 3008 - Is 42,000 miles too many miles - Lee Power

Do you really want to buy a vehicle with the known problematic 1.2 Purecrap engine?

Its low mileage & 6 years old, the wet timing belt is now due for replacement as it will be classed as arduous service conditions & has reached the time limit for replacement - Unless the wet belt OR the engine has already been replaced by a Peugeot main dealer recently.

Hi lee, no mate I wasn't aware of this issue. Your advice is keep well away?

A quick browse over on the Peugeot forum or on Google will show how problematic the 1.2 Purecrap engine is.

I wouldn't worry too much about the MOT history. It kind of suggests a slightly fussy inspector but, either way, there's no corrosion, no mystery leaks and no repeat problems.

You need to check the service history to see if the timing belt has been inspected when required. You can inspect it by removing the oil filter or, apparently, get a peek of it through the oil filler cap. The belts can contaminate the oil - it's less common on newer cars (this would count as newer).

I'm not sure I would reject an option based on perceptions of reliability alone. If the history and inspection are OK, then the question is really whether you can find an alternative. If you are scared of Puretech, you rule out Peugeot, Citroen and some Vauxhalls. Someone else will scare you off Ecoboost and rule out Ford. Then someone else will tell you TSI is bad and you rule out VW, Skoda and Seat. Everyone will tell you never to buy a diesel. Work beyond anyone who considers a Renualt or, by extension, Nissan. Then you think about Korean cars, but someone will mention issues with the GDI. You're left with the usual - Toyota, Suzuki and Mazda.

So, I suppose you should start with those three - see what's available in your budget, decide whether you like the look of them, try them out and check the history. If you don't like any of those options, you need to move through the other manufacturers until you find one you like that has a decent history. I wouldn't 'blackball' any option.

Lee Power is right. I would regard any pre-2018 puretech engine with deep suspicion, whatever the mileage. A bad batch of cambelts in this otherwise excellent engine caused Peugeot and their owners a lot of grief a few years ago. As said, it is possible to inspect the cambelt via the oil filler aperture - and measure its width using a special tool, which should be a routine part of a service.

An MOT history can tell you loads about a seller.

Take 2020 and this advisory:

Nearside Front Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint has slight play (5.3.4 (a) (i))

Which ended up being a fail in 2021.

And when it failed in 2021 it had a lot of work done, except for:

Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm ball joint dust cover severely deteriorated dust cover not fitted correctly (5.3.4 (b) (i))

which still appeared on the "Repair as soon as possible (minor defects):" advisory.

Why leave it when you've had all that other work done?

"""An MOT history can tell you loads about a seller.""

IT can also tell you about the MOT. For three years our A1 had an advisory ""near side drive shaft boot severely leaking. I did nothing about it other than check and on the 4th MOT nothing mentioned. Car is with no 1 son now and miraculously still OK

Regardless of how good or not the engine is, that's a lot of wear/damage to the suspension components on a fairly low mileage car. There was even an advisory for suspension wear on its first MOT. The first suspension component requiring replacement on my last car happened at about 80000 miles, and that was before it was even bad enough to get an MOT advisory.

It could have spent its life crashing over speed humps in town, but I'd be suspicious that this may have been owned by someone who lives up a long bumpy track, or used by someone who spends a lot of time driving round building sites.

Or possibly its recorded mileage was 'rectified' shortly before the first MoT test ?

Or more likely had pothole damage on that side. Our old Focus never needed any repairs to its suspension ball joints or springs the whole of its 160,000 mile life, not even the rubbery bits. Its only suspension repair was the replacement of a corroded bolt locating the rear antiroll bar.

I never buy a used car if I think there could be a problem or two, there are plenty to choose from.

[a] it can be easy to think there 'may be a problem or two' but equally easy to ignore that possibility ; [b] several on here are complaining that there are not enough to choose from just now.

Not a car I’d personally buy. There’s too many cases of engine issues with these and many rival manufacturers small capacity turbocharged motors - VW’s belt driven 1.4 TSi’s are good news though, but they do suffer other issues as they age.. I’d be looking at a Mazda 3/6 2.0 skyactiv petrol, a Toyota Auris or a previous gen Honda Civic 1.8 or HRV 1.5. These have no inherent reliability worries and they’re an easy sell when you’re done with them.
