Ford have announced today that they’ve been given permission to offer hands free motorway driving in their Mustang. Instead of the current situation whereby the car with a self steer function gets you to put your hands back on the wheel after a few seconds, now it’ll use existing driver awareness cameras to monitor the driver and permit hands off on motorways. So as long as it sees you paying attention it’ll self steer and adapt speed via adaptive cruise control. I don’t think it’s a massive leap in technology, but the first time it’s been government permitted on UK roads.
Tesla - behold - the autopilot system (well, except in the EU, where the term is banned because it most certainly is NOT a self-drive vehicle system).
Ford - hold my beer. Well, the driver seems to be able to now, as they don't have to steer any more, at least on motorways.
I've seen the viral videos of Teslas not spotting carboard cutouts of kids and animals in the road and plowing straight through them.
This is gonna end well. Not.
