Nissan XTrail vs Mitsubishi Outlander - Older99

Further on from a previous topic. I like the XTrails at my budget but also I was told to look at an Outlander

I have been told about this one :-

Mitsubishi outlander 2.0 di-d 4x4 2010, REG: BFZ1068 low mileage (125k) verified by VOSA , new cambelt and water pump November 2022, new disks and brake pads all around, new suspension arms front left and right, new engine mount and top sprut left and right, new engine mount and top sprut. Car is in perfect condition, no light on dash, no leaks. Full service provided oil and filters, all jobs done with reciept and stamps in logbook

He is asking £2995 which I dont think is a bad price

Advice/Comments ?

Looking at the MOT history the rear suspension will probably need new arms at the next MOT and the front subframe reported corroded also.

"Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
Front Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
Nearside Rear Suspension arm corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
Offside Rear Suspension arm corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))

Having said that these are quite a good old barge, I did some minor brake work- pads fluid etc - on a friend's example when they were living in France.

The rear springs and dampers seem to go soggy at this sort of age, his could have done with new dampers.

Like his, this looks like the same 2 litre VW PD engine, he never had any engine trouble with it.

I'd go for the Outlander. My old Mitsubishi got to 25 without any major issues. I'd be tempted to get under there and clean up the rust mentioned before it gets worse. Probably worth a little more investigation into the front subframe - i.e. how much is connected to it and how easy is it to change.

ASPW seems to like the X-Trail at his budget budget.

It'd be on my list here. Lots in Taiwan, and IIRC they carried on producing the older design here for longer (a good thing), though some, maybe a lot of them in Taiwan, might be 2WD, and probably the wrong 2W.

If you are now set on an SUV rather than an MPV, then I'd be looking at the 3rd generation Toyota RAV4 and Honda CRV.

With the 2.0 petrol and auto on each there is little to go wrong.

Meant to add, going diesel at this age and price point is (IMO) and unnecessary extra risk. If there were no petrol equivalent, maybe. If you towed a caravan or boat (where the extra torque would make a huge difference), again maybe.

Yes, you will get better mpg with a diesel. But with the lower cost of petrol at the pump combined with higher servicing costs and much higher cost should engine parts need replacing, it is highly unlikely that the overall running costs of a diesel engined car would be less than an equivalent petrol powered one over the course of 3+ years (unless doing big miles).

Car is in perfect condition

Simple fact, no 13 year old car is in "perfect condition"

Run fast, seller is a liar.
