Are MMT gesrboxes really as bad as people say. Looking for Auto small car for Daughter. Are they expensive to fix if clutch or accutaor goes. Have seen one with new clutch and new actuator. Good price

Despite them being totally reliable, if varying from frustrating to utterly useless, in trucks, in cars they are simply not reliable/durable and at best unpleasant in use.

Even Toyota couldn't make them reliable and dropped them apart from the aygo far as i know.

I wouldn't personally but if its cheap enough and drives as well as can be expected, can understand why you would consider one.

Toyota stopped using them because they had such a negative response. Same with Honda and the i-shift.

But it isn't just reliability you need to consider, its drivability too. We have a Suzuki Ignis with this type of transmission (single clutch automated manual) and I now wish we had gone for something else instead. Not too bad if just tootling along but borderline hazardous in a multi story car park. Get used to juddering starts when cold, slow and jerky gear changes (unless you time a lift of the accelerator pedal just so), slow responses if you want to overtake (I only do this using manual control now because I just don't trust it to react when I want it to). In fairness, it isn't actually too bad if you take manual control of the gear changes, though they are never quick. Overall, I'd say they make you look like a learner driver.

Regardless of how reliable or otherwise they are, I'd suggest something else. Such as a nice 1st gen Yaris (there are still a few nice ones kicking about and they use a t/c auto), or alternatively a Mazda 2 or Suzuki Swift.

I believe the Daihatsu Sirion which is really a Yaris in another frock came with a proper auto option, similarly Toyota's IQ had a different type of auto option, possibly CVT which Toyota do well.

IIRC the iQ was an automated manual

No, the iQ used a CVT.

Fantastic design showing just how much space could be liberated from such a small footprint. It saddens me both that the iQ wasn't the sales success it deserved to be and that the company responsible for it is also responsible for the Aygo X. Which may look good, but is not very well packaged. The Suzuki Ignis has the same wheelbase and overall length but has way more space for rear passengers.

DO NOT BUY ANY automated manual.

They are complex mechanically and wear. No-one at dealers is competent to fix them

One or two specialists but cars die and are not repaired so specialists giving up.
