I tried using the vehicle flasher as a fluctuating field generator (the commercial version has a thermal flasher in a can, hence the oldish caveat in the title, because this may not be compatible with fragile modern electronics) with a compass as the field detector,

No worky, not really surprising when one considers the car is made of steel.
