BMW 3 Series M3 - Repairing Suspension SubFrames - autumnboy
Due to BMW’s poor quality of protection from rust/corrosion on many issues.

Someone who has a BMW E92 M3, recently it failed its MOT due rust and corrosion to the rear subframe causing movement and needs a replacement.

He having searched the usual places online and most are no better than current one fitted.
The M3 frame differs from the standard run of models.

For a MOT pass can the bad areas be cut and removed then be plated and welded etc putting the strength back into the frame.

Subframes on modern cars are often hydro-formed, quite unsuitable for being repaired.

True, but this one is mostly tubular/box sectioned where halves are welded as one. Also many welded brackets welded for suspension bushings and suspension arms etc

Subframes are like ladder chassis on 4x4s, woefully poorly coated and painted, but small enough for long term owners to take corrosion prevention. measures annually, sadly few do.

I'd search high and low for a frontal damaged write off and try and get the rear subframe complete with all ancilliaries attached.

You could no doubt get the present one plated, but chances are welding will become a regular event if its that far gone already, good luck finding the chap who can that job well in situ.

Thanks,
He would remove and strip the frame for the repairs and rust treat it along with new bushes etc.

But read conflicting things about this type of repair can be a immediate failure for MOT ?

How much is a new subframe? I wouldn’t waste my time trying to repair it . New parts or scrap the car . It’s a safety critical component.

Hmm, from a person who has done lots of welding in my time I'd say this is a recipe for disaster. It's really difficult(impossible) to do this safely and permanently. Anyway if it's got that bad already most of the subframe will be on it's way out. Also remember an M3 has more horses to deal with.

It's a case of a new subframe if possible or a good used one. Rustproof either thoroughly - myself I'm a fan of Owatrol oil externally and Dinitrol internally.

Front or rear subframes can be the end of many a car. Whilst car bodies are usually galvanised these days (although this varies between makes) most subframes / suspension components(oh and sumps!) aren't.

Rust is still a car killer.
