C1 and D1 - Over 70 C1 and D1 entitlement retention? - edlithgow

Just remembered I should renew my UK license.

Was all going swimmingly online until I got to the bit where I have to give up this entitlement or apply by post.

Tellingly, they don't make it easy to get the forms, (havn't tried the post office yet) suggesting they don't really want you to do so.

How much of a hassle is it to do this? Medical required?

While I don't want to voluntarily surrender any existing rights, if its going to be a PITA and an expense every 3 years I suppose I will, since I dunno how likely it is I'll need them again.

To retain C1/D1 entitlement after the age of 70 you'd need to undergo the full medical for vocational licences, at your expense, at each 3 year interval.

Do you actually need C1/D1 or are you just reluctant to give them up?

Reluctant to give them up.

As a general rule, when you surrender any right to the state, you don't get it back.

Plus I dislike being "nudged", but I suppose I'll bend the knee.

I'd guess my block-of-flats Renault Dodge ExBT workshop truck camper might have fallen under those entitlements, and, TBH, I probably shouldn't have been driving that in London. Made my mouth go dry.

Probably wont need anything like it again, though one never knows.

If you lose C1/D1 at age 70 they aren't lost forever, just suspended - you can take the medical anytime after that and get them reinstated.

If your Dodge camper is over 3,501 kg gross weight then you will need your C1, but not if it's up to (and including) 3,500 kg.

I would assume that you would need to pass a supplementary driving test as well as the medical in order to get them reinstated. This would be reasonable in context, but inconvenient on a personal level.

No supplementary test to pass, just the medical.

Isn't the UK residency requirement a bit of a problem?

Isn't the UK residency requirement a bit of a problem?

You don't need to be resident in the UK to retain a UK licence - you do though need a UK address for correspondence.

Renewed my D1. Medical 15 mins, £60, from Dr who specialises in this. Hidden benefit: Dr found nothing wrong! Yes it's a hassle but seems to be sensible on policy grounds. Our volunteer service also renews MIDAS testing every three years.

Pretty certain you also need a valid UK passport. My sister has just lost her licence when it came up for renewal as she’s now got Australian citizenship. She has a Uk postal address but her passport has now expired so she can’t prove ID to meet the licence conditions.

Can she use a birth certificate?

I don't have a UK passport so it isn't a requirement for a UK driving licence

I suspect the issue is that you have to be able to show right to reside in the UK. One way is a UK passport but other routes are also available.

For the online renewal you need to give the addresses of where you have lived for the last three years. I suspect that if you enter Taiwan, they might raise a query.

Edit: You need to enter a GB address where you are living. Living has the meaning of residency, not just staying. Of course, one can be 'economical with the truth'.
