Porsche Boxster 987 - Boxster buying advice - Nico Farigo

Hi, I'm looking at purchasing a Porsche 987 2.7L, does anyone have any first hand experience with these cars? Common faults, experience running day to day with regards to reliability and mpg I could expect?

With the first generation Boxster gaining classic status I kind of thought it may lessen depreciation lost on the 987 purchase too

Thanks for reading :)

I’ve never owned one , but know lots of people that have . They’re not as reliable as you might think . Parts and labour to fix these is expensive. There are plenty of specialists out there that can give advice. Join the owners forum?

I have owned 2 Porsches over the last 20 years. The 987 came out in 2005 and was replaced by the 981 in 2012. As I recall the 2.7 was offered until 2008 when a next gen 2.9 was offered.

It is without doubt a great car to own and drive. The only time you do not want to drive it is in the snow !

Porsches are expensive to own and maintain. I have a 2010 2.9 PDK owned from new. It has been a fantastic car. Always had it serviced a local official Porsche centre. Maintenance cost have been about £1k a year but now increasing. The service intervals are 2 years or 20k miles. Had mine serviced every 2 years. If you can find a specialist Porsche garage service cost will be a bit lower

PDK Gearbox failed at less then a year old, replaced under warranty been fine since. The early 987's had issues with the Rear Main Seal (RMS) which is an engine out job. Apart from regular servicing and changing brake discs and pads which I do my self have not had to many unexpected issues.

I would be very careful about selecting a 987, they are complex cars and any problems are likely to be expensive to fix. I would look for a full service history from an OPC. There is a lot of tat out there.

I seem to remember there were problems with a dodgy intermediate shaft bearing in the chain-cam drive system - try googling ' Porsche IMS bearing failure' for info.

Nice one John, I had forgotten that one.

I think a lot of the IMS bearings were changed at the same time as the RMS.

Porsche did change the design.

Ed China did buy one on Wheeler Dealers and either Ant or Ed did change the IMS with the newer modified one.
