VW Golf 2013 - Oil leak - KJA6912

Hello,

I've got an oil leak coming from underside of my VW Golf

Any ideas on where this is coming from?

Thanks,

Difficult to get an exact fix on this from a photo, but looks like the gearbox . Needs further investigation.

Worth checking the tightness of that bolt... that's lovey and clean under there, it's either been steam cleaned or your as sad as me and actually clean underneath!!!!

As suggested worth checking the tightness of the bolt, will probably be 35 to 40 Nm. May just need a new crush washer (of course that means draining and refilling, may coincide with an oil change?)

Doesn’t look like a drain plug to me . Seems to be a bolt connecting the gearbox to the back of the engine .

Which engine & gearbox.

What does the liquid smell/feel like?

Looks like seepage from the gearbox drain plug, Could be tracking from somewhere else, (I have a rocker cover leak that I thought at first was from the gearbox) but the bizarre cleanliness might make this easier to see.

Dunno. No experience of such cleanliness.

Assuming it is from gearbox, first move should be to locate the fill plug and check the oil level. You probably havn't lost much, but it would avoid the slight risk of driving around indefinately with low oil IF just tightening up the plug a bit stops the leak.

IF it doesn't, and you have to remove the plug to replace the washer, it would also avoid the classic empty gearbox and stuck fill plug gotcha.

I've sometimes smeared the washer with RTV silicone and put some PTFE thread tape on the last few threads, but that shouldn't really be necessary with a new crush washer.

Looks like a weepy sump oil drain bolt to me. Oil and filter look clean - recent change?

Fails MoT if it makes a pool 75mm in diameter within 5 minutes. If it's just a drip or two overnight, I would ignore....apart from checking the torque of the bolt as suggested above. The oil change mechanic might have just screwed it up finger tight, got distracted, and then forgotten to tighten it properly. Very important not to overtighten - risk of stripped thread which could cause a slight leak like this.

The reason I asked about engine / gearbox type & smell of the fluid is I was trying to see if it was possibly brake/clutch fluid from a concentric clutch slave cylinder - they fail!

Looking at the pic again it does not look like a drain plug, maybe the OP needs to check it is tight and get back to us with more details of the engine and gearbox type so we can help more, but it looks like he has not added anything since the original question…

IF it’s from the sump, which can be easily and cheaply checked and topped up, this would be reasonable. OTOH IF it’s from the gearbox, which is harder to check and more difficult and expensive to top up, and is often regarded as filled for life, just living with it is risky.

....As so often happens Andrew, shame because some of the faults and questions are quite interesting.
