Whilst searching for a replacement for my Audi A4 PD Tdi 130 I noticed that the Octavia fitted the PD engine without a DPF right until 2008.

But power output of the Octavia is limited to 105 and the engine seems harsher and noisier than my Audi.

I remember speaking to taxi drivers whose stable product was the Passat PD and they claimed that the earlier engines dating back to 2003/2004 were the best and more reliable.

Is there any truth in this ? And were the later engines fitted with pieso crystal injectors as opposed to electromagnetic as designed by Bosch ?

I do remember experts claiming that fitting a DPF to the PD engine was a disaster and VAG quickly moved on to use the 2.0 CR Diesel.

Early cars with the 1.9 pd engine were all fitted with mechanical/ electrical solenoid injectors . Later versions with the 2.0 pd engines had the piezo injectors fitted which were notoriously unreliable, causing many cars just to cut out dead due to one faulty injector. I’ve always found the 1.9 to be a much smoother running motor . This engine was also used in the Ford Galaxy if similar era .

The 1.9 pd had been generally a great engine although some later versions (bxe?) have had major mechanical failures. Unfortunately it's getting more difficult to find good cars with this engine as they are all getting on a bit now.

The lower power versions are still surprisingly driveable/torquey - the 100 version tugged my previous Skoda Superb barge along very well indeed.

Re refinement - the 1.9 pd engine has never been known for this. The Audi A4 was better than most due to additional sound proofing, engine mount design and the fact the engine is installed in a longitudinal orientation. Unfortunately the additional soundproofing can also be the Audi's downfall as additional foam has been fitted near the engine bay such as behind the front wings - in time these get wet through and can cause major rust.

Beware the later 2.0pd especially in an Audi - for better refinement it can be fitted with a balance module driven by the same drivetrain that ran the oil pump. This can fail but a side effect is no oil pressure - not great! The pd unit injectors were changed to another manufacturer as well and that didn't go well - triggering a recall I seen to remember.

Avoid any pd engine fitted with a DPF - the cam driven/ electronically operated unit injector pumps were not designed around active regens needed.

I had the BXE 1.9 in a late 2008 Octavia, it never gave a moment's bother in about 95000 miles. It did not have a dpf. It was the 105 version and was plenty powerful enough, yes it was a bit noisy, but that was the Octavia, a noisy car! I would have one now if they still made them, although I did have some transmission problems with the 2nd one I had. I think the BXE Conrod issue was a fairly small problem overall.

Many thanks for this really useful information.

And you explanation about engine configuration.

So to find a replacement for my A4 PD 130 should I be looking for a Skoda Superb or Passat or A4 if I wish to keep the longitudinal configuration and the 1.9;pd engine

And which of these three cars would you rate best , if it’s at all possible to find one in reasonable condition. I am so impressed with this engine and car and missing it so much since I’ve loaned it to my daughter while her S4 is in the workshop for an extended period

To be honest the 2.0 CR 140 (and 170) used in numerous VAG cars from about 2009 is probably just as good.

It is certainly more refined, probably more economical and generally very reliable.

The 1.9 PD 130/150 was effectively replaced with the 2.0 PD engine leaving the base 1.9 105bhp which frankly isn't as good as the earlier 130 versions. Not as reliable and lacks the torque. I'd avoid the 2.0 PD in all guises unless very cheap.

I'd agree with the above but with one complication the 2.0 CR circa 2009(until 2014?) is it's one of the engines that required a recall post dieselgate and obviously they all have a DPF.

Myself In 2015 I jumped from the black pump (1.9pd diesel mk I Superb) to the green pump (1.4tsi petrol mkII Superb). One big advantage for me is being able to drive free into city Ultra Low Emissions Zones - for now!!

Given the choice again John would you still choose the Superb mk1 over the Passat or the A 4 from the same era and sharing the 1.9 PD engine ?

The 2.0 CR did have the recall but it isn't a huge issue. You can certainly tell when the DPF does an active regeneration but the DPFs on these really aren't an issue in my experience.

If you want ULEZ then yes you should look at the petrol options.

I wouldn't bother with a Superb Mk 1 now days - really very old and most have gone to Eastern Europe anyway. A Mk 2 with the 2.0 CR 140 in SE or preferably Elegance spec is a nice car.

Think you are right PD . There aren’t many still available .

These cars are particularly popular to visitors from Eastern Europe and I have had two offers for my A4.

Must be they know something we don’t know ? Or simply because they are fixable and long lasting?

A lot sadly get broken for parts. Look for used parts for various models on popular auction sites and many will be sent from Lithuania etc.

Used cars are still comparatively cheap here and the figures add up.

A Volvo V60 I had a couple of years ago when the same way.

I liked the mkI Superb as it had great rear legroom(my son was tall - grew to 6ft 5") - way more than the B5 Passat or A4. If I could wind the clock back I'd love another 18month old mkI 1.9 pd Superb for £8k please. Saying that my neighbour has a 2002 A4 Avant running well at nearly 400k miles - looking rusty though.

Time has moved on and I think the 1.9pd has had its day. I had the chance of a 2016 1.4 tsi petrol A4 a few years ago - I wish I had possibly gone for that. Tsi engine with the longitudinal layout.
