All this wringing of hands an gnashing of teeth over the stopping of Fiesta production!

It's just a name that has been discontinued. So Ford bring out a new supermini in 2023 - they could always call it - now let me think - FIESTA!

Everyone's happy...

Well........

if Ford are simply discontinuing the Fiesta name, and are planning to bring out an all new small car, what do you suppose the chances of it being anything other than an EV are?

In which case (going by the forum) its probably fair to say, not everyone will be happy!

Maybe they could call it the Virtue. I'm sure (the few) potential owners will be glad to know it would be very good at signalling and steering, though only in a leftward direction.

May be the idea of some marketing branding expert.

Ford Fiesta - Fiesta - what's in a name? - Terry W

It is a business decision.

There is value in the Fiesta name - a generally well regarded car. Normally discontinuing a brand name would be negative associations with reliability, performance etc.

But Ford would also be considering whether a new and very different model should be clearly differentiated from its old technology. Many of their competitors will be launching new EVs with new branding.

They may prefer to position Ford as a brand with a future, rather than a legacy product deeply connected with the past. Advertising and marketing can send messages of new technology under a new name.

They may prefer to target a younger market who would associate the Fiesta name with their grandparents' generation. Concern for the environment is apparently stronger in younger age groups in the UK - perpetuating an ICE brand may have negative associations.

Ford have already launched the Mustang Mach-E as an EV and Mustang is an even older model name than Fiesta, so why can't they launch an electric Fiesta Mach-E ?

They probably don't think the Fiesta name is 'cool' enough for want of a better word. The Mustang is seen as a fast powerful car, a million miles away from the Fiestas image.

If this forum had been around at the time, I do wonder if there would’ve been a discussion about the Zodiac and Zephyr being phased out?
Names have a shelf life and will be dropped after a period of time - it just so happens that Fiesta had a good run.

Ford tend to chop and change the names. Cortina, Sierra, Mondeo, for example. Zephyr was taken over by Lincoln (unless it was always theirs).

Lincoln first used Zephyr in 1936, so just borrowed by Ford UK - no different to many Vauxhall names being used on GM cars in the USA

Are they actually going to bring out a new supermini? Or a new Focus or Mondeo? I don't think so. The market is changing. There is less demand for those sort of cars and more demand for SUV types. Ford in the US is mostly a pickup truck company. Where I am in Australia it is mostly that way also. Lots of Ranger pickups and a few Mustangs and Everest SUVs. Fiestas, Focus, Mondeos are all gone. If you want a saloon or hatchback you won't find it in a Ford showroom. Ford have made this choice because that is what is selling.

Fiesta would be a good name for a small electric car - they could emphasise the 'e' in fiEsta.

Why are modern car names so insipid? VW's T-ROC, ID4, ID5 just baffle me.

Ford Fiesta - Fiesta - what's in a name? - corax

So the Fiesta is a small car that's cheap to run but it needs to be replaced with a new design in order to switch to electric power.

How do the new crossover/SUV/pick up designs affect battery range if they are fully electric? Being heavier and less aerodynamic than traditional saloon/estates? We know that it makes a difference with ICE. Are electric motors affected as much?

The advantages of light weight and aerodynamics seem to have been completely ignored in favour of fashion, unless the above is now irrelevant.

They definitely are affected. By how much in relation to ICE vehicles would take a much bigger brain than mine to work out as there are so many variables!.

It isn't irrelevant, but ultimately people will buy what is considered most desirable at the time. If that happens to be huge SUV's, then so be it, the manufacturer will just use ever more enormous battery packs in order to meet whatever range is deemed acceptable. At the moment, people don't really see to consider efficiency when it comes to EV's, only what the range is and whether that is workable for them. Maybe as the cost of living crisis starts to bight harder, especially re energy costs, people will start to pay more attention to which EV is going to give them most miles per kWh?.

if its anything like petrol diesel prices, most complained about the prices but didn`t really seem to care about MPG and didn`t check, they paid up regardless, so I think who gets the most miles to KWh in an EV won`t care, only about range which people seem fixated by?

Ford Fiesta - Fiesta - what's in a name? - Adampr

I think the cost to fuel an EV compared to the cost to buy it is so low that very few people consider it.

I also watched a video from John Cadogan the other day that said that pollution from tyres is actually far, far (several magnitudes) worse that from exhaust pipes, and will only get worse with the introduction of EVS which are heavier than ICE cars.
