Toyota Verso - Deciding on a price bracket for a vehicle for taxi - Ace Ahmed

Hello,

Would A Toyota Verso be a good MPV for covering 30k+ miles, annually as a taxi vehicle? Also, if I were to get a ULEZ compliant verso diesel. Could the ULEZ compliancy become void if London decides to change the vehicle requirements?

Would it be justifiable to essentially pay double of what a verso would cost, to get a Toyota Prius Plus? I'm asking these questions to help my father decide on what would be best suited as a taxi vehicle as he's having a hard time justifying purchasing a Toyota Prius plus as a vehicle for use as taxi.

Regards,

Ace

Where I live smaller Taxis are nearly all Toyota Auris / Corolla or their "lookie likie" Suzuki Swace Estates - Hybrids that driven carefully give 50+mpg

Toyota Verso would easily cope with the mileage. The Prius plus would be easier to drive in urban areas, but they are expensive due to the current demand for hybrids.

Thanks for the reply. What would be your opinion on the petrol version, for the Toyota verso in terms of mileage. I understand it won't be as efficient but would it still work out ok.

The 1.8 petrol engine is easily capable of big mileages as long as the oil is changed regularly, as it's chain cam. The earlier version found in the Avensis used to suffer from oil consumption issues but not all of them. I had an 03 Avensis with 135k that used no oil until I changed cars.

The Verso will (I think) only come with the later valvematic engine and that had no issues. It's a good reliable engine that will do 45+ mpg on a run in the Avensis, slightly less in the Verso due to it's less aerodynamic shape.

What would your opinion be for the 1.6l petrol engine for the verso. Or should i give that a complete miss and pay the extra 1/2k difference in price for the 1.8l engine instead?

Iirc all Verso diesels are EU V (they used the Toyota AD series diesels rather than the BMW-derived which are EU VI). EU V doesn't comply for the ULEZ in Glasgow so would be suprised if they did for London.

Oops, just looked on Autotrader & obviously they did make some with the BMW diesels 2015MY on.They will all be manual transmission though which I would have thought would be a pain in London.

But yes, councils can tighten up requirements in the future to e.g. Euro VI d.

Take a walk along a taxi rank and note which cars are being used. In Cambridge you see mostly electric cars and most of them are Nissan Leaves.

True, electrics/ hybrids are an option. Though they're very much on the costly side of things.
