post 1998 - Are cars older then 1998 exempt from road tax if.. - biggins and beagle

Reading the link hear; it quotes in the first sentence

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_Excise_Duty#:~:text=...0

Registered vehicles that are not being used or parked on public roads and which have been taxed since 31 January 1998, must be covered by a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)

So am I reading this one right?

Registered vehicles that are not parked on public roads, and have been taxed since 31 January 1998, must be covered by a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)

So again am I reading this right?

Registered vehicles that are not parked on public roads, and have been taxed Before 31 January 1998, Do not need be covered by a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)

Can not get my head round this for the love or beer nor whiskey!

In my last

Regarding my last sentence in last post

"Registered vehicles that are not parked on public roads, and have been taxed Before 31 January 1998, Do not need be covered by a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)"

If the car is older then 1998 (because you can not tax a vehicle before it was on the road right!) can you park it on the road side and not have to SORN it?

Hoping that my above presumptions are correct; As again stated in my last post

"Registered vehicles that are not parked on public roads, and have been taxed Before 31 January 1998, Do not need be covered by a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)"

If a car dose not need a SORN then is it tax exempt?

Imagine you have an old 1930s car sitting in a barn, that has been there for years. It was last taxed in 1995.

You don't have to make a statutory off road notification (SORN) for it. It can stay in the barn without you getting a fine for failing to SORN.

If you want to add your old sierra to your barn collection, which was used on the road up to 2004, you have to complete a SORN for it.

If it's been taxed since 1998, it needs to be SORN'd if you stop using it.

If the OP is also concerned with old cars and road tax then any car older than 1982 is £ zero.

If it's been taxed since 1998, it needs to be SORN'd if you stop using it.

That statement can also be interpreted in different ways: 'taxed since 1998' could mean either intermittently or continuously, or right up to the present day. I assume it means that only cars which have never been taxed since 1998 are exempt from SORN ?

You're right - my clarification should read "If it's been taxed at any time since 1998, it needs to be SORN'd if you stop using it"

This doesn't make sense to me. My 1980 TR7 has been taxed many times since 1998. It is now exempt from tax. If I stopped using it, I do not think it would need to be 'SORN'd'.

AIUI although 'tax exempt' this is implemented by taxing it at nil rate. You still need to renew each year. If you fail to renew or SORN then you'll get caught in the DVLA 'dragnet' for untaxed vehicles.

Right but can it be parked on the road side with out a SORN

post 1998 - Are cars older then 1998 exempt from road tax if.. - Maxime.

It does not have to be sorned, but it does have to be insured on the public road. applies also to older "tax exempt" vehicles"

No, SORN is Statutory OFF-ROAD Notice - it can't be parked on the roadside if it's not taxed/exempt, insured and MoT'd, so nothing to do with SORN.

Wikipedia is not the law. And whoever wrote that needs to distinguish between "since" and "after". Refer to government advice.

www.gov.uk/sorn-statutory-off-road-notification

makes no mention of 1998.

Perhaps it is the case that unless a vehicle has been taxed after 1.1.98 when SORN was introduced it is not "in the system" and therefore will not be picked up by the system as untaxed. That would make sense because presumably they don't have a reliable database of 'barn' cars.

Anything that has been taxed after 1.1.98 is presumably now known to big brother and you will have to SORN it if it isn't taxed and insured.

Exempt status is for vehicles over 40 years old.

I SORN the Caterham every year. Once SORN has been declared it cannot be used on the road (and that includes being parked).

For a car to be used legally on the road (and that includes being parked) it must have insurance, tax (you still have to "tax" it even if its zero) and an MOT (unless its age exempt). But even with all the above it still has to comply with the law regarding tyres, lights etc etc.

The law does include a reference to 31st Jan. 1998.
