Brake judder! - 43576

My Citroën AX, I had new brake disc and pads few months ago, few days ago, I heard a faint noise from the suspension at the front because of my hearing problem hard to diagnostic where it is. I have found it is the strut damper is leaking and slight loose. Today it has been refitted new springs and dampers. Now when I touch the pedal it judders and vibrate to the steering badly. Went back to the garage again, they confirmed that I need new disc because of the old suspension has effected the brake disc alignment.

He wants £145 with vat! Is that true the bad suspension will affect the disc alignment to become unsmooth brake?

I am going to do myself to save money with Hayne manual book, do I required new pads? Or just the disc?

Unless the discs and/or pads needed renewal I would have thought that the work you describe would not cause brake judder unless something has been incorrectly reassembled ? And after reassembly a tracking check might be worthwhile.

Apart from what Andrew said, its possible the disc may have been handled by the mechanic with the damper oil on which would cause the judder, I would try either using brake cleaner to remove the oil from the disc/pads or strip down and clean both the disc and emery cloth the pads where they contact the disc, it is possible you may have to replace the pads if they are contaminated as it is hard to remove oil from pads

if doing it yourself . then strip down and inspect as you go. besure to let us know. something loose or stuck.

I'm guessing with being an AX, its too old to have ABS?

If it did I would say the sensor is playing up and causing the ABS to kick in.

My does not have ABS, went to the garage have tracking check and wheel balance it all fine, I am sure it is the disc.

Have you checked the front wheel bearings ? Slight play here could give you the symptoms you describe.

A relation had brake judder. The grease monkey admitted they'd used a hammer to get the disc off.

Replaced FOC.

Was the top mount replaced, as a worn bearing can cause steering vibration and shake when brakes are applied, ( I just noticed you mentioned slightly loose which I assume is top bearing loose)

Yes I mentioned the strut was loose due to worn damper, it has been replaced, all are new mount, bearing, and wheel bearing at the same time, today received new pads and disc do on the weekend, I am sure it will solve the judder issue.

I found that honing the (original) front discs cured high speed brake judder on my 70,000 mile Audi. Handbrake on, chock wheels, remove front wheel, start engine, engage D or first gear, apply Black and Decker fitted with carborundum wheel to rotating disc surface. Gets rid of any lipping as well as dealing with areas of unequal coefficient of friction which causes the judder.

areas of unequal coefficient of friction which causes the judder.

I've read about this. Apparently it can be caused by braking from higher speeds and remaining stationary with the brakes applied. The area of disc under the pads retains heat more than the rest of the disc, resulting in a change of property of that area of the disc.

But were you able to get to the inner face of the disc or was it only one side you did. When I fit new pads I always clean the discs with coa*** abrasive then use brake cleaner but only by rotating the disc by hand. Normally deal with any lip by chamfering the edge of the new pad slightly so it fits flat on the friction surface. Never had an issue after even though new pads on used discs do take a few days to bed in. Historically I have managed 2 sets of pads before the disc need replacing.

Found the fault is the hub is bent slight. When I took off the disc and turn the engine on put in 1st gear let the wheel spin off the ground, I see the hub movement is not straight! I have checked if the bearing hub is bend or doesn't fit in, but it nothing seems to be wrong. It is the hub! I have learned a lesson, next time check the hub instead of replace new disc! Thanks for all helpful from member of Honest John :-)
