Honda CR-V - Does new shock absorbers increase the driving comf - tombond

Hi,

I would like ask if I can do anything to increase comfort of driving of my old CR-V (2009)?

My current driving experience in this car is like driving a pick-up truck (driving is stiff / firm, lots of under the car noise, little like driving a tractor ), but CR-V is also a family car.

I had a few test drives of newer models (2015-2017) and the driving experience was much better in term of comfort, noise, softness. I'm guessing my CR-V in 2009 and few years later had also this comfort but with the age it's lose it somewhere, so I just wondering what is going to happen with that car. I'm just wondering if this is only to the age of the suspension ? I had the car on the suspension diagnostic and nothing has been advised. The car has been fitted with new all four sway bar links, but the rest of it I believe is there from 2009. I'm just wondering if replacing any components of the suspension (like all 4 new shock absorbers) can bring back some sort of comfort, or this might not help? What do you thinks?

Thank you for all suggestions,

Replacing the shock absorbers will improve ride comfort if the old ones are worn out, but not if they're fine. Given that you're looking for a new car, you could just let the next owner decide what to do; replacing them won't add any value.

Leave the shockers alone!

Honda shock absorbers are £200 each + fitting - call it £1100 inc VAT

you would not get that back.

Even 3rd party shock absorbers are probably £100 each or more

All the older Hondas I've driven have had a firm ride, much road noise, but good handling.

I used to replace the dampers on my old cars (they are more durable now), but I never noticed much improvement in ride comfort - they were actually firmer. But the handling was much improved.

Buy a different car if you need more comfort. I would say it's not worth fitting new dampers and sound proofing. To really make a difference you would have to take the seats and trim out and cover the whole floor and boot at least. Then you would probably find something else that is irksome :-)

What size wheel and tyre on the car?. A higher spec or sportier trim will have larger diameter wheels with low profile tyres, these will give a harder ride (due to shorter stiffer sidewalls), more noise (more rubber in contact with the road) and worse mpg (ditto, plus, potentially a stickier rubber compound).

If you really like the car otherwise, consider buying a set of smaller wheels (second hand) on which can be fitted narrower tyres of a smaller diameter.

Shock absorbers only need replacing if they no longer damp the suspension movement. It's the good old bounce-each-corner test. Otherwise leave well alone unless the MoT test says one is leaking.

When I bought the car, it was fitted with the 235/65/R17 budget all season tyres, it's pretty new tyres, on the rear have 7mm grip, the front has 3mm. As the profile of this tyres is already high, I don't think changing the tyres to even premium one will make a significant change, but I might be wrong...

The front tyres are pretty much done, so maybe worth replacing then with some new mid range.

What are your tyre pressures?

The tyres surely can't be that new if the fronts only have 3mm of tread left. That is about when I'd be thinking of changing them!.

But yes, tyres of that size shouldn't be the cause of the poor ride. But they are fairly wide, so would certainly contribute to noise levels, bearing in mind some tyres are noisier than others of the same size. Having the pressures too high would make the ride harsh, but I'd have to assume you have checked?. Only other thing I can think of is that the tyres have a higher load rating than necessary, which (in theory) would mean a heavier and stiffer rubber compound. But even then, I wouldn't expect the difference to be that big unless the weight rating was way higher than it needs to be.

You have not said how long you have owned the car, but for me, the presence of budget tyres would have put me right off it. If the previous owner has cut corners on something as important as tyre quality, where else have they cut corners re servicing and maintenance of the car?.

But it sounds like you will just have to put up with the poor ride. The noise, as was mentioned, sound proofing kits are available and that is something you could do yourself, though it would be a very fiddly job!.

I have found that tyres seem optimised for quietness and grip when they are new with a decent amount of tread.

At 3mm they are getting close to the end of their useful life, particularly with winter, rain and possibly frost on the way.

My last set were Kumhos from memory. They started to become very noisy when well worn - a change immediately made the car quieter. At the same time make sure the tracking has not strayed outside of spec.

I think brand-new tyres will always sound quieter than well-used ones, as rubber slowly hardens with age, especially if it is exposed to plenty of sunlight; and of course the tread becomes shallower. The process is normally imperceptible, so only noticed when new tyres are fitted !

The shocks absorbers which I considered was NAPA brand, which are premium aftermarket, I have found they are Monroe brand just re-boxed. All four would cost about £140, and I would replace them myself. however that's a big job, and if you advise to leave the shocks alone, I'm not convinced to replace them.

I have already dropped tyre pressure from 32 to 30psi, but don't feel any difference. Maybe all the rubber bushings of the suspension hardened and give such firm ride...

I also considering put 4 new premium tyres, if that's helps.

I would have thought that bushings would be too thin to soften a rough ride caused by the road surface - they are there to prevent bodywork noise. Most work will be done in flexing tyre sidewalls, hence the harsher and noisier ride from low-profile tyres.

It’s springs that hold the car up and primarily affect ride quality.
A damper is (fairly) easily compressed by hand, a spring less so. They obviously work in harmony, but the primary purpose of a shock absorber is to damp spring oscillations, hence its more accurate name of damper.
I’d be looking to see if there’s a variant of the CR-V that had softer springs.
