I think all competition is healthy, although I agree entirely with what they said about Cinch and BCA.

A friend bought a car from one of the "online" dealers, and returned it after 3 days. But he was refunded in a couple of days.. warning lights, aircon, smell inside, The checks done don't include checking all the above, just vehicle condition and tyres, which were legal, but at 3mm.

He did use the option to return that is standard, and the car was collected in 2 days, so not all bad.

Big outfits have always pushed smaller ones out of the way, but I guess the underlying reason is the shortage of used cars for resale. Plus the steady move towards online buying of anything ....

I can't imagine there'll be many tears shed over this. The fact that people would rather spend £10k+ on something they have never seen, rather than go to an independent dealer, tells you all you need to know.

I don't even like going into a franchise dealer and being given nasty tea whilst listening to lies about gap insurance for hours on end.

Exactly.

Pushy salespersons are a turnoff.Especially when it is junk - like Gap insurance as you say.

Also - ever tried getting a refund?

The car sales industry has a well deserved bad reputation. And it is all their own fault.

That is why we have bought 3 of our last 5 cars from Carfile.net. Simply order exactly what you want at the online price and when its there turn up, pay (or sign the PCP) and drive off.

The other 2 were bought from local dealers, one was a pre-reg and the other a run out they had to sell (or pre-reg) before the emissions rules changed. Both great deals and in both cases I made it clear to the salespersons I did not want the nonsense, just the car and if he tried to up sell anything I would leave.

And well done.!

When i bought some previous cars, I said at the beginning, Nothing that isn't compulsory and nothing I don't want. Just give me the contract to sign, I'll pay and thank you!

I'm amazed that people order a car online and the first experience they have of it is when its unloaded at their house.

Don't they bother with a test drive? With my 6 foot 4 frame and 35" leg I don't even buy trousers online!

If at some point there is no way you can sit in a car and actually drive it I don't see how car buying will work. Will online sellers refund potential buyers if they claim they just don't like the car very much?

I'm quite happy to buy online if I know exactly what I want.

Yes, the likes of cinch and cazoo will just take it back again and refund you if you don't like the car. All the money saved on show rooms and pointy-shoed teenagers to flog cars covers their costs.

As Adampr says, yes. Bought an Up! from Cinch (£10k), which was great apart from the fact that I soon reallsed that its lack of telescopic steering wheel adjustment, combined with a current knee problem, meant it was uncomfortable to drive for more than a few miles. Returned without any hassle; replaced by a Mazda2 from Cazoo.

The Mazda has had a few issues, now sorted, and I would definitely use this method again.

Cazoo & Cinch closing gargaes?

Garages closing is life - the fact that your grandad ran it from 1950 and it went bust on 2022 is like any business - run it badly, poor quality cars, poor quality service, being greedy ...............

There was a boy in my school class from the age of 5 - his uncle & dad ran a local garage. The family was minted - he seemed to get more presents at Xmas than the rest of the class.

Move on 30 years the boy in my class died Another son did not want to sell mostly 3+ year old 2nd hand cars.

Abandoned the old garage, built new premises 3 miles away - Saab dealer - £20K+ cars in the early 90s. Bust in 3 or 4 years - wrong new car franchise and older customers did not have the cash for expensive 2nd hand cars. The BIG mistake was to abandon the customers who had supported his wider family for decades.

Last car we bought never had a test drive - my wife tried the passenger seat out as she's disabled and needed to be sure she could get in and out but we did not do a test drive as they only had the van version of the car and it was not working! Never had an issue driving any car and drive different vans at work without an issue.

Is the return procedure really as simple as is described..

We returned a hire car recently in the UK and the checking arrangements went over the car in the utmost detail checking for the slightest scratch.

I know that we have two employee schemes for car importers locally and the staff are not taking advantage of this offer because of the horrendous cost of returning the car in perfect condition.

Is the return procedure really as simple as is described..

Cinch limit the return window to 14 days, and "you mustn’t use the car after telling us you’re cancelling the agreement and you must keep it in good condition from the day it was delivered". Full T&Cs here: www.cinch.co.uk/returns

I had only driven mine about 20 miles I think, and the chap who collected it seemed pretty easy going. Perhaps they went over it thoroughly when it got back to base. Certainly no Spanish Inquisition at any point in the process, and no pressure to keep it. Made me feel quite guilty :)

Edit: actually the full T&Cs are in a link in the page I posted, which is a summary.

Appreciate this might not work for everyone. The Up! was delivered on Thursday, rejected Friday, Mazda ordered Sunday, Up! collected (by Cinch) Monday, Mazda collected (by me) on Thursday (Cazoo charge £100 for delivery). It all happened pretty quickly, but that's still basically a week without a car. That wasn't a problem for me, but it would be presumably for a single car multi-kid family.

I think we all know someone who has bought a lemon and struggled to reject it and get their money back. If these new firms make it easier, then all power to them.

I sold my last car (2016 Kia Sorento) to Cazoo. The money was in my bank account before the car left the end of the road. I did look it up on their web site a few weeks later - they had refurbished the alloys, and did their best to identify all the defects on the car. I'd have been happy to buy it if I'd been in the market for one. The only strange thing was that they declared the satnav SC card was missing - that was definitely there when the car left me, so someone has had it away.
