Hey there,

I've had this issue in my car for a long time and i'd really appreciate some advice...

The EPC and check engine light have been on (mostly all the time) over the past year, and after driving for more than an hour, the engine will cut off while driving. After seeing so many mechanics who can't find anything seriously wrong, I noticed the engine light comes on after breaking sometimes.

I also noticed my left rear brake light doesn't turn on. I replaced all the bulbs there, with no luck. I did some reading and figured it could be the break light switch. I just tried to replace that, but now whenever I plug the new one in, the brake lights turn on and can't be turned off until i unplug it! (the rear brake light still doesnt work).

I was wondering if anyone had any wisdom to share regarding this problem?? Could it be a fuse? did I screw up fitting in the brake light switch?

There’s a special procedure to fit a new brake light switch on these , if it’s not followed correctly, then the lights won’t work properly. It’s unlikely to be a fuse issue, but worth checking anyway. One brake light not working is a different issue. There could be a problem with the contacts in the bulb holder.

Not 100% understanding. When you say the brake light comes on constantly but also doesn't work, what do you mean? Do you mean the two that do work are stuck on and the one that doesn't work still isn't coming on?

Either way, yes, it sounds like you made a mistake putting the new switch in if has fixed nothing but created a new problem.

If your mechanics can't find anything wrong (I presume they've got the error codes) then it sounds like you have electrical issues. That being the case, it's worth visiting an auto electrician rather than a mechanic. It might be a simple fix like a sensor or switch, it might be something a bit trickier (like a new ECU required) or they might say your wiring is breaking down and, whilst they can fix it, this will probably keep happening.
