Turns out its quite a sensitive seismic detector when up on axle stands, and an effective cardiovascular and limbo-dancing stimulant if you are underneath it when its detecting.

I scooted out sharpish in plenty of time to take La Presidenta's warning text message.

She must have one as well, or I suppose the Presidential Limo might also work. Maye just needs bigger stands.

A couple of minutes earlier would have been nice, (though less effective cardiovascularly), but I suppose even the limo lacks predictive capability.

New cars, eh? So many computers, so little use.

Sounds a close call. Is it set up for P- or S-wave detection?

Mostly L-waves I'd think.

Its perhaps not actually ridiculous to think that modern cars could be used for monitoring of earthquakes though they would of course need wireless data links.

If they had active stability control they''ll have accelerometers, the suspension will be instrumented and fairly well understood, and its relation to the ground surface will be quite consistent, There would be enough of them deployed for good coverage, though over-concentrated in urban areas

Whether they'd ever be likely to be sensitive enough to use for monitoring early S and P waves for use in prediction I dunno.

That looks quite a severe shaking: kudos to you for your typical British un-flappable reaction.

How long did it take you to decide:

1. Should I stay here and use the car to to protect me from falling masonry.

2. Should I get out in case the car gets shook off the axle stands (and get hit by falling masonry).

Don't remember musing on it very much at the time, but in fact the car was parked under the High Speed Rail link overhead railway. If THAT came down I doubt an axle stand is going to take it.

I found the problem with my first earthquake was deciding whether it was actually happening or if it was some cerebral anomally like a stroke, but I've had a few of both now so I can tell the difference.

If it comes over like that on a forum post, well, its the Internyet, y'know?

I was very flappable at the time
