Indications: Slow response to accelerator, especially in second gear; abnormal instantaneous consumption – typically 80mpg instead of 65 on level M'way

Engine starts and apparently runs normally; only known possible triggers: 20 litres diesel added recently, plus the dregs of a bottle of injector cleaner. Car has no DPF, done 85K miles.

Possible explanations: Turbo? Faulty injector? Dirty diesel? Electronic problem ?

Any suggestions? I intend to monitor progress until needing more fuel, when I shall add some V-power, which usually has a detectable effect on running.

I think I would be looking at any air leaks in the intake system and intercooler circuit. Any unmetered air could be the cause of your symptoms.

I'd suggest possible loss of turbo boost. If there are no weird noises or smoke, check the hoses downstream of the turbo.

The above suggests a fuel system restriction.

Simple things first.

When was the last time the fuel filter was replaced?

The first action on any suspected diesel fuel problem is to replace the fuel filter.

Having eliminated that possibility, then go on the to the more complicated stuff.

Thanks all, for suggestions. Fuel filter replaced in March, so I don't suspect that - unless it was put on the invoice but not on the car, which might be possible, given the attention that the service manager took to my instructions (he didn't read them).

Anyway, the car is perfectly driveable, so I shall continue to monitor as before, and see what effect super-diesel may have later.

If you suspect that the fuel filter was not changed it's worthwhile changing it to make sure.

For sure it's not a popular service action among todays mechanics, the modern generation don't like dabbling with actual wet, smelly diesel fuel.

I explicitly said that I didn't suspect that ....

Well, all kinds of things might be possible, without them being actually suspected - i.e. thought to have happened :-)

Google "Planet Owners Map" and a get a diagnostic.

Not all faulty components put on an EML.

And generic scanners don't often pick up all Peugeot faults.

UPDATE - a month ago I gave the car its promised dose of V-power and took it for a 300-mile round trip. No definite improvement occurred, so I handed it to my friendly local VAG-cum-bodywork specialist this morning. He said he thought he knew what the problem was. An hour or two later he announced the quickest fix ever - a loose pipe attachment to the turbo. Not sure how that might have happened, as I know zero about turbos (I wasn't even sure where to find it as Haynes doesn't show that specifically, though it does tell you how to remove it).

Anyway, the engine now sounds subtly different, but I haven't driven it enough to be certain of the cure. However Simon's diagnosis agreed with what I thought he might find. Cynically I suspect the culprit may be the cowboy who serviced the car a few months ago.

Incidentally, Haynes also recommends oil and filter changes for the 1.6 HDi engine at 6K miles, not 12K as in the Peugeot service schedule. I have gradually shortened mine from 10K down to 7 or 8.

Does it have an orange turbo air pipe sleeve like this:

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/392930906749

Over time it splits or gets oil in it and causes it to come loose.

Believe it or not Peugeot once suggested 20,000 miles was an acceptable interval for oil change on the 1.6 engine! It soon proved to be very costly when turbos died of oil starvation.

Gibbo - just had a look under the bonnet, where I can see the rim of what I assume is the orange sleeve in question protruding from a large jubilee clip. That is tight and I can't see it coming loose as it is now. My oppo may have tightened it, I'll ask him.

Update - yes, that was what he found, he says it didn't look to be split.

<< Haynes also recommends oil and filter changes for the 1.6 HDi engine at 6K miles, not 12K as in the Peugeot service schedule. >>

The same Haynes advises changing the timing belt every 36K or 3 years - but I wasn't going that far, in view of discussions on here. Mine was done at 10 years (as in the car's service schedule) and 71K.
